I started my first semester as a junior at San Diego State University. I decided to go for a finance major because I was interested in knowing about stock investing, even though I didn’t know anything about it. After taking the first introductory class, I feel that the content I learned is not really my thing.
I was googling offers for people with bachelor’s degrees under BA, and based on my tastes, this is what I found:
Under Finance. Personally none of the positions and job responsibilities grabbed my attention. I understood what I would do if some of those positions were offered to me, but I know I would not enjoy doing any of them.
Under Marketing. Some job offers really grabbed my attention, like “Social Media and Marketing Specialist” and “Web Marketing Manager.”
These jobs ask for skills that I would enjoy to learn like SEO techniques, HTML, Pardot, web design, use of Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.
Under Information Systems. Here I didn’t fully understood what the job offers asked to do based on job responsibilities, but there are many data analyst positions. Most of those positions ask for abilities in “maintaining data” (not sure what it means).
I want to mention that have an Associate’s Degree in Computer Information Systems from community college. Some classes that were cover under it include Photoshop and Flash classes (which I enjoyed); computer repair and networking classes (I liked too); and one Java class and one C++ class; I liked C++, but java not so much, although I believe I would not mind working in something related to programming if I compare it with working in a finance job position.
To summarize, based on my tastes and on what I would enjoy learning, like SEC techniques, HTML, Pardot, web design, use of Adobe products, etc., what should I major in?
Between the Business Administration majors offered by my University, I am deciding into switching to one of the following:
GENERAL BUSINESS
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
MANAGEMENT
MARKETING
Should I major in an area and take a minor in something else? or would it be more beneficial to major in an area and instead look for internships right away? Please give me your personal recommendations. I truly appreciate your time and responses
