Prompt: Some people say you should be content with what you have and accept who you are. But it is possible that too much self-acceptance can turn into self-satisfied lack of ambition. People should always strive to improve themselves and to have more in their lives — friends, things, opportunities. After all, where would we be if great people, both in history and in our own time, did not try to have more and to improve themselves?

Assignment: Is it best for people to accept who they are and what they have, or should people always strive to better themselves?**

Humans should always strive to better themselves, rather than simply accepting their place in the world. If people were unwilling to do so, then society could not progress and would achieve little. The remarkable souls who are willing to always better themselves are the true pillars of society. Pervasive evidence from history and the modern age prove the importance of always striving to improve oneself.

Historically, Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, illustrates the importance of never simply accepting ones position in life. Socrates, at the time, was considered annoying and rude, as he constantly posed difficult questions to others. However, what people considered his arrogance masked the true nature of his inquiries. Socrates always wanted to discover new ideas in philosophy, and consequentially questioned everything. Despite his achievements, he continued moving forward and creating new developments in philosophy. In the present day, his achievements are omnipresent, from the Socratic Seminar to the Socratic method. Socrates always strove to better himself and others, and never stopped asking questions until his death. The monument of his achievements proves the importance of always striving to better oneself.

Thousands of years later, Dean Kamen rose to fame as an inventor whose refusal to stop working and train of achievements prove how bettering oneself should never cease. Dean Kamen gained a large sum of money very quickly through his patents, and could have easily retired early. However, he was not content to do so and he spent his life dedicating himself to helping others on a massive scale. From providing clean water across Africa to inspiring thousands of teens, his actions have indubitably helped humanity. he was only able to create such a massive impact due to his willingness to continue besting his prior achievements and never simply accept or be content with his accomplishments or who he was. Dean Kamen's massive impact upon the world illustrates how always striving to better oneself can have massively beneficial results.

Deliberately analyzing Socrates and Dean Kamen proves how it is indeed best for society to always strive to better itself. Contentment with our state of life may not always be detrimental, but it can never lead to progress. Progress drives society forward, and thus, it is essential to always strive to improve ourselves.

Could someone help me with this? Whenever I write essays, they always feel a bit...flat. I follow the UNiversal Template suggested on this site, but I can never fit in three examples in my time. I always take up all the space in about twenty minutes, but my essay never seems compelling. It always feel like it's just....there, and never seems to connect and prove the thesis the way I want it to. Could someone grade this or give me advice? Thanks!*

I would give a 5 for the terrific use of language; it flowed nicely and had good vocabulary. However, to get that 6 I would use another example. One point I would make is the use of the transition “historically.” What do you mean by historically? It usually means that a certain phenomenon happens repeatedly throughout time, however, you used it in the sense that you were pointing out a historical fact. I would have used a transition that included the time period such as “X years ago.” All in all though, good essay. Just try to fit in that one extra example.

Can you please grade mine?

Thanks! How do you structure your time generally? I honestly did not have time to write an extra example, but maybe that’s because I’ve only given myself twenty minutes. Still, I want to be consistent on that. Can two example essays still get a 6 if they fill up all the space?
