Prompt: Should people make more of an effort to keep some things private?

Essay:

Privacy of our thought and feeling is one of the most valuable tools of our lives. Privacy of our thoughts and feelings allows us to shelter them from other people’s needless criticism and to strengthen our relationships with said beliefs. So, the statement “Should people be more private about some things” is true. History and life provide evidence to bolster this claim.

The first occurrence where privacy of thought proves key is when Daniel E. Sauer, an Oregon candidate running for governor, was enforcing his campaign to be reinstated as governor. he was a very venerable man and had the vote of many of the Oregon citizens. With his promises to clean up the state education system and lower tax rates, he was a very plausible choice for election. However his reputation was tarnished when he thought it best to announce to the public his thoughts on gay marriage and how he would fight to prevent its proliferation in the state of Oregon and abroad. His unwillingness to keep his opinions and believes private from the public became the end of his candidacy and left him with significantly less votes.

The second occurrence of privacy took place during the Middle Ages in the book “To Tell a Tale” Marco Coelo, where the main character, Cesar, is entrusted by his wife to keep a devastatingly embarrassing secret private; her ears looked like those of an ass’s ears. Failing to do so would result in the tarnishing of his wife’s reputation as a beautiful figure in her hometown. When it became too difficult to hold the secret in any longer, he ran to the local marshes and told the waters the unknown secret. Cesar’s ability to retain and control his urge to let loose his thoughts and beliefs of some secrets saved his wife’s reputation and, potentially, his marriage.

To reiterate, keeping some things private can prove very auspicious in avoiding conflicts. Privacy is necessary to retain one own and other’s peace of mind, safely, and respect.
