Prompt: Is it possible to have an effective group without a leader?

There is a popular maxim that states a tribe cannot be made up of only chiefs , which warns one of the problem of having too many leaders. But, is a tribe with no leaders just as helpless. The analysis of past civilizations has continuously showed us that all groups must have a leader. All groups will eventually select a leader directly or indirectly, but this individual may not directly control its individuals.
There have been many attempts to create leaderless governments such as communist and socialist societies, but all of these societies are controlled by an individual or a group. The first large scaled attempt of a communist country, occurred in Russia. After a series of revolutions and a long lasting civil war, a communist government in Russia was established. However, this so called communist government was far from the idealistic communist's dream. Even though all individuals were supposedly equals one man, Stalin, was in charge of keeping the peace. However, Stalin was far from being equal to his minions. He had the power to sen anyone to a gulag, a prison camp, and felt no remorse when taking away the land of peasants living in poverty for the peoples' government's use. Stalin's leadership showed the world and future generations that even equal societies built on the foundation of communism will always be run by a leader.
Even though most countries place great emphasis on political leaders, not all leaders are acknowledged. Pioneers in fields of science, medicine, and humanity lead others towards advancements, but are rarely called leaders. Issac Newton has been named the grandfather of physics for his experiments and contribution towards classical physics and calculus, but is never referred to as the man in charge of all physicists. Thus, showing us that a group may indirect have a leader who isn't in control.
History has shown us that leaders are an inevitable part of society, but not all groups have a traditional leader. Pioneers have led groups of scientists and other professionals towards advancement, without directly controlling them but in a way leading them. Thus, showing us a leader is a necessary part of every group, although not always in control.
