PEOPLEhttp://cdncache3-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png use the term "wisdom" to mean many things. They describe someone as wise if that person is intelligent, well-informed, or capable of making good decisions. These descriptions, however, are not really useful in distinguishing wise people from unwise ones. Happiness is a better measure of wisdom: a wise person is a happy person. Even the most intelligent people should not be called wise if they are not happy.

Assignment:

Is it best to determine how wise people are by how happy they are? Plan and WRITE AN ESSAYhttp://cdncache3-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Happiness. It’s the thing that everyone searches for in life, the elusive light at the end of the tunnel. However, what defines happiness is something that may differ from person to person. There is no set definition of happiness despite the fact that it can be achieved by anyone. Wisdom does not gauge happiness on an accurate scale as can be seen by a study from Psychology Today, the novel Green, and by the principles of Buddhism.

In a recent study published by Psychology Today, the matter of happiness was examined. In the brain, chemicals or certain neurotransmitters are released when a person is “happy”. This can be stimulated by a variety of triggers from drugs to experiences. Chemically speaking, what registers as “happiness” in one’s brain may be experienced with anyone with the right stimulus and release of certain chemicals in the brain. Wisdom is not the factor that allows people to be happy. Specifically, the study mentioned childhood as one of the happiest stages of life. Children do not possess the level of wisdom that may be expected to experience happiness yet they are the ones who are the happiest. Perhaps, it is naivety that brings happiness, not wisdom.

In the novel Green, a family experiences difficulties ranging from natural disasters to public rejection. The family is of no affluent background and the family members struggle through the most mundane tasks needed for survival. The reader may expect the family to be in a low and miserable state, yet the opposite is observed. The members of the family find happiness in each other, and it is because of their reliance on each other that they are able to pull through difficult times. There is no deep wisdom that the characters exhibit; rather, it is love that they have that brings them happiness. Hence, love may in fact be a more important constituent of happiness alongside naivety when measuring the happiness that people experience.

The religion of Buddhism focuses on four noble truths that revolve around suffering. The first noble truth states that life is full of suffering and it is humans themselves who bring about the suffering. In order to escape the cycle of suffering, one must follow the Middle Path or Eight-Fold Path to achieve nirvana. Nirvana is coming to peace with the aspects of the world and this may be the zenith in life of what a person can attain. The happiness that results is achieved through a path of peace rather than gaining just wisdom.

Wisdom is a highly valued trait that is difficult to attain. Yet, it does not correlate with happiness. Happiness is better associated with naivety, love, and peace – three factors that constitute a more accurate definition of happiness. Wisdom is an important part of life, but for the ephemeral time that individuals have on Earth, it may not be hold the highest significance of what humans need in life.
