I have no idea where I stand...

Throughout the times in United States history, our country has been gradually trying to make this country an equal oppurtunity for all. "With liberty and justice for all" is what we say in the pledge of allegience every single morning. Even in a society where we are so advanced, there is racial discrimination and a lack of women's rights before our very own eyes. We are flawed by thinking our society is equal. I see this by personal experience and by looking back at history.
By personal experience, I go to a very good school. We are very strong in academics and get into strong colleges. We are composed of many jewish, indians, and asians. Down the road, about 1/2 mile away, is another school similar to ours but very different. This school is composed of people african and spanish descent. Their academics is not in par with anything like my school. In my school, 97% of kids go to college. In the school 1/2 a mile away, the requistes are nothing close. We are so close in location, but so far off in equality. Why should one group of kids have better oppurtunity than the others? In a society where we ask for equal oppurtunity, why is there such a different in ethnicity between both schools? We are not trying hard enough to give every equal oppurtunity.
Throughout history, women have been trying to earn their rights as a women. The first battle as a women was the right to vote. Women were on the bottom of the list. They were behind everyone including african americans. To think that slaves were given greater rights over a free citizen during a time such as that, is almost ironic. After earning a women's right to vote in 1919, one should care to realize how long it took for them to get equal oppurtunity. Isn't this supposed to be a society of equality? Also, women have been considered stay at home mothers. Fifty years ago, it was looked down upon if a women were to go to work. Now, in this society, we are gradually seeing more of it happen. Nonetheless, it is still much harder for a woman to get a higher job than a man.
By looking at these two prime examples, we can see how much inequality there is in our society. Some of this inequality is unintentional while some of it occurs because people do not believe that everyone is equal. We must criticize this aspect of society. Why can't everyone get what they want equally? We must learn from the past and grow as a society to give everyone equal oppurtunity. Its a flaw we must overrun.
