please help - ASU for scholarship matching

My son is a HS senior and was accepted into ASU and Barrett’s Honors College and he visited campus recently. We are OOS for ASU. He was also invited to apply to the Grand Challenge Scholars Program (hasn’t heard back yet). We were honored by this, as they typically do not invite incoming freshmen to apply. He absolutely fell in love with ASU and Barrett’s. He was awarded the President’s scholarship $15,500 and a student loan of $5,500. He will need a little more if he is going to attend ASU. We simply cannot pay $30K per year for him - we have 3 children and the other two are in middle and high school now and will also be needing financial support for college. He was awarded full tuition at Alabama which is his second choice. Just, FYI, he did apply for outside scholarships, but has not received any as of yet.

On the ASU website, there is a webpage that asks the question: “I was offered a better scholarship from another university, will ASU match the offer?” The stated answer is: “Please contact Undergraduate Admissions at 480-965-3040.”
I am wondering if anyone has any experience or information with asking ASU to match a scholarship? If not, does anyone have any advice on how to approach this with the admissions people? He really wants to go there, but without more aid, it will not be possible. I would appreciate any and all ideas.

So…contact ASU and ask.

Yes, sure, of course, thank you for your comment. I do have a phone call scheduled for later this week. I am just trying to find out if they have some sort of informal policy of how they handle matching scholarships or if they do not match or if they match half…just wondering if anyone has been through this with ASU and has any advice…I did look up and see that ASU is part of the WUE and allows WUE states to get 150% of in state tuition, so I’m hoping they can be at least a little flexible…

Are you a resident of a WUE State…and did your kid get accepted with WUE rates?

If not, this has nothing to do with you…or your student at all.

Sadly, my state does not participate in the undergraduate exchange for years now - they withdrew - and they have a reputation for no negotiating. I know several people who tried. My state was part of a different exchange anyways. You are correct and I do understand the implications. I’m looking for any evidence that ASU has shown any flexibility in negotiating, that’s all. I haven’t been able to find any information from a successful negotiation with ASU and that is really what I’m hoping for. Plus any advice when negotiating. I have read numerous articles on this, but I would love to hear from someone who successfully negotiated for merit aid with ASU- or even another school.
