My son is a HS senior and was accepted into ASU and Barrett’s Honors College and he visited campus recently. We are OOS for ASU. He was also invited to apply to the Grand Challenge Scholars Program (hasn’t heard back yet). We were honored by this, as they typically do not invite incoming freshmen to apply. He absolutely fell in love with ASU and Barrett’s. He was awarded the President’s scholarship $15,500 and a student loan of $5,500. He will need a little more if he is going to attend ASU. We simply cannot pay $30K per year for him - we have 3 children and the other two are in middle and high school now and will also be needing financial support for college. He was awarded full tuition at Alabama which is his second choice. Just, FYI, he did apply for outside scholarships, but has not received any as of yet. On the ASU website, there is a webpage that asks the question: “I was offered a better scholarship from another university, will ASU match the offer?” The stated answer is: “Please contact Undergraduate Admissions at 480-965-3040.”
I am wondering if anyone has any experience or information with asking ASU to match a scholarship? If not, does anyone have any advice on how to approach this with the admissions people? He really wants to go there, but without more aid, it will not be possible. I would appreciate any and all ideas.
@NCMom1CK - The best bet is calling admissions. We just finished paying roughly $25k per year for our son. He has the same scholarship and did the student loan thing. He has also worked all 4 years in the Barrett admissions recruiting office. He uses that to pay for books. The admissions people might be able to help.
