Ok, so my family is upgrading from dial-up to cable/dsl. Does anyone know which one is better with costs and speed? I don't really know much about the internet other than the fact that I use it. I think our cable company is Comcast which is offering a 6-month thing at 20 bucks per.

Not mine. It depends on where you live. If in a big city, then that might happen, but if cable usage is more spread out, definitely go with cable. It's much faster.

ILECs and CLECs (The Bellsouths, Verizon, SBC, other local providers, etc) are still trying to catch up with comcast, cablevision, and roadrunner.

and i think a lot of DSL providers use PPPoE (the devil)

I recommend DSL. SBC charges $15 a month for their ADSL service, and $30 for their VDSL service. Comcast meanwhile charges $50 for their cable after the 6 months are over. I'm on Yahoo's ADSL service, and Im paying less than I did for dialup and enjoying much better speeds. Coming from dialup, you cant lose either way unless you get "AOL for Broadband"

DSL speed also varies by distance from the provider... the farther you are from the main DSL uh... place, the slower your connection will be. Sure, some cableage may be more expensive, but think of the speed and possible package deals!
