hey! so i'm really confused for all of the admissions process, i am going to be the first person in my family to go to college in this country. my main concerns are about what i have that will help get me into a good college ( i really want to get into ucla and usc but i doubt i'll make it)
i'm a junior my main concern is about my gpa, uc's only look at grades 10-11 right? if so my gpa would be like a 3.6.. 9-11 is 3.78 or so. my sat score so far is 1760 but that was only one time im taking it again later, and my act score is a 28, im taking it again in june also. my extracurriculars are a lot better though, i play tennis competitevly, i used to be top 100 under 16s in socal but its gotten a lot lower but im trying to raise it. ive been number 1 on varsity all years and will probably be next year as well, and gotten the most valuable player award all years, and next year i will probably be captain. i am actively involved in my church, i am on the worship team, play guitar and sing and help out with the childrens ministry. i also have been tutoring middle schoolers every week since sophomore year. and then i have been on newspaper since sophomore year, i've been doing layout since this year and next year i hope to become either editor in chief or at least a senior editor. i really have no idea where these things will get me into, as i said i really want ucla or usc but do you think i have enough to get into any of them? i know my main problem is gpa and sat/act but yeah. oh yeah, and another thing i think that will help me stand out is my nationality/ethnicity; i was born in canada, but my parents were born in taiwan and grew up in brasil so i am technically canadian/brasilian. and my culture is more brasilian than anything, and i am fluent in portuguese. so yeah.
so tell me what you think! any tips or anything would be soo appreciated :D
thaaaanks!

best shot would be CC then transfer

what do you want to study? i’ve seen kids with worse gpas and/or SAT scores get into UCLA

I don’t know how you’d fair in college admissions, but if I were an adcom, I’d push to get you admitted at even the top UCs. You seem to be a really down to earth guy, who does activites based off your interests (that church/community stuff really stood out to me as well as the tennis stuff). A lot of people come on here and say “what activities should I do to up my chances of getting into Harvard” which I find extremely shallow. You are a fresh face (which is much needed around here) to this whole process. Keep doing what you’re doing, try and get some better grades the next two semesters, up your test scores a bit, and I think you’ll do fine in college admissions.

If my above analysis of you were blatantly wrong, I’d rather you not correct me. I definitely need some faith restored in prospective college applicants again.

schee410: well i was thinking about business, advertising or marketing and i know USC has a good business program. or i want to major in journalism and so something in that field. or i might even major in history, because i do like it and i can go into a lot of things from history.

senior0991: haha the only analysis that is wrong is im a girl not a guy thats about it though thanks for the positive input though! it really made my day, because i was freaking out after i finally realized that colleges only look at your gpa from grades 10 and 11… haha
