Hi guys!

I am currently a sophomore in High School and I want to know what I have to do in order to meet requirements to possibly be accepted into UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI or any other. If I do apply, I don't live in California so my chances are lowered a lot.

About me:
-I am currently in the IB program at my school (toughest classes my school offers)
-I am a sophomore (just incase you didnt catch that haha)
-My current Unweighted GPA for sophomore year is a 4.0 but I screwed up freshman year so my overall unweighted GPA is a 3.6
-My weighted GPA is a 4.5
-I've been in Varsity Tennis since 8th grade and plan staying in it until 12 grade
-I've been volunteering at the Hospital for a year and a half now
-I've played the piano for 13 years and the cello for 4 years
-I'm in various clubs around school including Beta Club, Music Honors Society, French Honors Society, National Juniors Honors Society
-I want to be a bio major or something that can put me in the track for a medical career
-I've been a Girl Scout since the beginning and I am about to finish the highest award (similar to Eagle Scout)

I know all the clubs are just extra little filler things but I want to know what I can do to get accepted.. freshman year I got 4 B's which was pretty bad so I hope they overlook that....

Thank you in advance :-)

UCs don’t consider freshman year grades. Just make sure you keep up your grades and do well on your SAT/ACT.

well let me tell you that your weighted GPA is really good. Keep up the grades and try to bring up your unweighted GPA to a 3.7-3.8 and you should have a good shot at all the UC’s as of now you can get into all of them except UCB. Overall I think you are really good and also get high test scores.

hey chance me back:

It is worrisome that you don’t know the basics about what they look at. As said UC doesn’t look at freshman grades. UC weights gpa in a different way, so read the UC site to get familiar with that,. The most important thing to do is be sure that you will be UC qualified by taking the a to g course requirements. Take some time to look them up. The thing that seems to hang people up is a full year in the arts.

I wonder if you are familiar with the OOS tuition rates and if your parents are willing to pay that?

SAT’s and ACT’s are alllll that matter for the UC’s. A friend got in with C avg an 2350. Also your a girl so that sucks b/c they want guys. Ummm…try to publish a paper, or start a charity. Right now you blend in with the bajillion other people who are gunna apply. Also UC’s will suffocate you so be prepared…

Well if you wanna shot at the top UCs you’re gonna want to get at least a 2200/32 on your tests to be competitive. Your clubs look nice but you should try taking on a little more leadership positions.

My thread (chance back please): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke.html#latest

@sloth83 leadership DOESN’T matter as much as you think. The UC’s want high tests and that is that. High Tests=happy trustees=more $$$=better education=more applications=higher test scores=long living institution.

@daswagnation ok but tons of applicants have high test scores, thats why schools rely on ECs and essays to judge an applicants character and differentiate them from the thousands of other academically qualified students.

But OT: I think you have a decent chance at all of them if you have scores to match, Berkeley and LA might be more of high match than a match but I thing you will get in.

in each of the UC forums you can find profiles of the SAT ACT and gpas for last fall’s uc applicants for each campus, and what percent of each band of test scores and gpa groupings was offered admissions by each campus. Here is the one for UCSB: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/files/freshman-profiles-ca/freshman-profile-ca-ucsb.pdf

UC’s are twice as hard to get into, cost twice the money, and require higher expectations for Non-Residents. I’m just a freshmen in highschool but I live in California and I’ve had people from UC’s come to my school and explain to us how easy we get it in cali instead of out of state. Good luck though! I’m sure you can do it!
