Please Help! Human Ecology Freshman's Scheduling Woes

I'm planning on going into a pre-med track and I desperately want to take intro. chem. My enrollment window opened yesterday and as soon as I get home from work, I'm scrambling because intro. chem lab slots are being filled up. So the only way I can take Chemistry is if I drop NS 1160 (Personal Concepts and Controversies)...is it absolutely necessary to take NS 116 if you are taking NS 115 (Nutrition, Health and Society) ?

NS 116 is only a 1 credit class and not even graded. Please help!

It’s not absolutely necessary; however, it is highly recommended for both freshman and transfer students. :)

There are about 20 different sections for NS 1160…if you drop the one you are currently enrolled in to add Introductory Chemistry, will any of the other sections fit into your schedule?

Also, when you say you want to take Introductory Chemistry, are you talking about CHEM 1560? If so, that course is not recommended for premed students. You might want to look into taking General Chemistry (CHEM 2070) instead; it is the first semester course of a two-semester sequence that fulfills the medical school General Chemistry requirement.

According to student center, there are only 3 sessions for NS 116, this process is so confusing haha
Thanks a lot for the advice, I am taking Chem 207
have you taken 116 before, is it essential as a co-requisite to 115, what goes in that class?
thanks again!

Don’t worry, there are definitely more than three NS 1160 sections! :)

Since you’re an incoming freshman, you’ll have priority enrolling in NS 1160. If the sections currently listed on Student Center don’t fit into your schedule, you can just wait till the first NS 1150 lecture and talk to Joy Swanson, the course administrator, about getting into the section that fits into your schedule.

Yep, I’ve taken NS 1160. I thought it was very helpful with regard to reviewing for exams, and it also helped me ace the term paper (worth 25% of your final NS 1150 grade). NS 1160 is graded on a pass/fail basis, therefore as long as you attend class, you’ll pass. The assignments in NS 1160 are designed to help you work on your term paper throughout the semester. These assignments, ultimately, help students develop a complete term paper by the time it’s due (around the end of the semester).

Hope that helps! :)

oh! i used class search and only three sections came up, got it figured out now and enrolled in a session that fit, ah, thank you so much!!! truly truly grateful
a final question: if we enroll in a class, does that mean that our spot is held and finalized (unless we decide to add/drop) so i have nothing to worry about?

Yep, you’re all set! Once you’re enrolled, all you have to do is show up to class…and learn, of course. :p

You might want to click on the “My Class Schedule” link on Student Center to verify that you’re enrolled in all the classes you chose. I do this every single time I enroll in a class just to be on the safe side.

You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help!
