Should we hold onto the old when innovations are available, or should we simply move forward?
The world continues to evolve and improve. In the last hundred years, mankind has been said to have made more technological process than in the past thousands of years. Technological advance has a “snowballing” effect, meaning that growth occurs at an exponential rate. The rapid changes to our gadgets have left us confused about whether the new is truly better. Our fear of the new inventions has stopped us from wholeheartedly embracing the innovations, which are sure to improve our quality of life.
One good example of better innovations would be our means of communication. When the Titanic sank, panicked friends and relatives were kept in a state of suspense and tension, as telegrams of the names of the living and dead took a long time to arrive. The ship was also unable to signal to other ships for assistance to arrive in time, thus resulting in many devastating deaths. Instant messaging now allows society to share news and stories easily, raising greater awareness and allowing authorities to respond to emergencies more effectively. During the 2015 Malaysian floods in the southern states, evacuation was carried out very quickly as the local residents were notified immediately. This significantly lowered the number of fatalities, proving that accepting new innovations could make the difference between life and death.
Another new innovation that could benefit the world is the development of green energy, such as wind power, hydroelectricity and geothermal power. These clean sources of energy are renewable and non-polluting. If developed countries focussed their efforts on developing and introducing these clean energy sources, carbon emissions could be drastically reduced, global warming prevented and the health of many civilians improved, Governments should move forward from fossil fuel power plants, which only damage the environment and affect the global standard of living. This illustrates my point that clinging onto the old is not necessarily better, as new discoveries would improve our current situation.
Overall, people should accept new innovations and move on from outdated tools and gadgets. The world is developing faster than ever before, and novel inventions may be our solution to the problems faced today.
