Please help me choose a college!

It's so late and I have to choose between two universities as a transfer student. I won't give the names but will adequately describe my situation. Please tell me where I should go based on what I say!!! And asap please!

College A

This college is very prestigious, top 25 university. It has a beautiful campus, is about an hour away from home and lots of school spirit and great sports. It also has a huge and amazing alumni network. I also have a lots of friends here. Lots of things to do on campus and overall I think I will be happy.

However, I was not accepted to my first choice major here but my second. The second choice major is not exactly what I wanted to study, but its still considered an excellent school within the university although I personally don't have a lot of interest in the curriculum; maybe I'll feel as if I'm wasting my time?? There are also not many clubs and organizations strictly related to what I want to do, although I think the alumni network makes up for it. Additionally, the area outside campus is not very safe and I have to live with a couple roommates, which is not ideal. Also I may have to take an extra class or summer class to graduate on time (more money!!)

College B

This college is less prestigious although still pretty good. It is almost a top 50 university. It on the other side of the country, almost a 6 hour flight. My major here is exactly what I want to study and I love the curriculum. For my major they are considered excellent. They have organizations and clubs that give hands on experience and are great resources. It is an urban campus and has both pluses and minuses to it but I think I can adjust in time, although I'll miss the picturesque campus of College A. Overall, great faculty, internship and study abroad opportunities, and many things to do in the city. I also have a single room which is nice.

However, it is very far from home and it won't be possible to come home for Thanksgiving and maybe even spring break. It gets extremely cold, which is something I'm not used to at all. Additionally, the alumni network is not as established and well regarded as College A's, although I think their internship program and other resources makes up for that. Also, there is less school spirit and I don't have many friends here. The building is fairly older.

Overall the cost is quite similar and I got almost the same amount of money from them. I may have to pay extra tuition for an extra class or two at College A or pay for airfare and cold weather clothing for College B.

I am completely at a loss and have to decide by today or max by tomorrow. PLEASE HELP.

Honestly, if it was my decision, not getting my major would be a total deal breaker. Of course, my major was Computer Science (back up was Math), I’m not sure how close your two options are. Is changing your major possible at School A, or are you locked in to the not so favorite major?

In terms of clubs, I’m sure you can find some that you’re interested in… if not, you could always start your own! I wouldn’t let roommates or clubs be the deciding factor though, tbh. If you want to enjoy yourself and make friends, and you put in the effort, you can be happy anywhere.

Sounds like what you should be considering is the area/campus, and your major/curriculum. It seems like you’re leaning towards School B already, it sounds like you’re more passionate about the classes they offer which I’d say should be the biggest factor (assuming you’re set on your major, since most transfers know what they’re doing).

If you can deal with the distance, go with B. Definitely. You’ll regret it if you don’t go for it.

I live far away from my school and flying across the country a couple times a year is a pain. It is possible because I know a lot of other people that do it just fine, but it isn’t very fun and kind of frustrating for transporting all of your stuff.
I would ask your parents and see how they feel about flying/driving you home for breaks. If they say yes, then it seems like you would like College B more.

However, if they are very nervous about it, College A seems better.
And without the distance aspect at all, College A still seems better based on the fact that it is very possible that your area of interest will change and the experience of going to a #25 University vs. a #50 seems like it could help you out as you enter the job market.

College B!

Orion, being in a major he loves will likely do better for his job opportunities than his school’s rank.

Go where you think YOU will be most happy; it is hard for anyone else here to really judge that. I would just sleep on it. Either way I’m sure you will adjust in time and be happy in either one.

College B. Get out of your comfort zone. Don’t go somewhere where you know people.

College B, hands down! Why even bother if you can’t study your first choice?

College B, They are both well regarded for your major. Unless your major is something like accounting, the college’s prestige doesn’t matter nearly as much. (All accounting programs are roughly the same due to mandated course requirements) You will have more career advancement opportunities for your major in college B. In terms of social life, a school in an urban area will be great, and you will have great opportunities to make new friends and expand your Rolodex with contacts in your chosen Industry so B is better for that reason as well. Costs are a wash as you described.
It is always better to do what you are passionate about then to pigeon-hole your self for prestige, so keep that in mind.

I agree with others: I’d recommend College B.

It’s all about fit. If you see yourself there, go for it!
