I posted before and a lot of people told me to choose NYU but if I go to NYU (and don’t receive any outside scholarships)
I would have to pay 14,000 a year in loans. Whereas for Temple, it’s 13,000 a year if I don’t receive outside scholarships and part of the loan money would be private, not federal. I have faith that’ll I’ll be able to get some outside scholarships but you can never be sure. My parents are leaning more towards Temple though but they said it’s up to me. If I go to NYU I would have to live in the cheapest housing too which has no air conditioning. Living off campus isn’t a possibility for the first year. Going to community college isn’t what I want because my parents don’t have enough cars for me and my brother to use and there would be a LOT of schedule conflicts with my family which would just make me depressed. My parents won’t let me take a gap year. Please give me some advice!
I am a big fan of Temple – but Stern is really in a different class.
You said in another thread that you’d have choose an Arts and Sciences major at Temple to save money (since Fox School of Business costs more than A&S). So you’re not really comparing apples to apples.
Can you spell out the packages from each school? Tuition, fees, R&B for Year 1 (for the actual dorm you’d choose, which is hopefully the cheapest); then list grants, work study, and loans (federal/institutional/private). Are your parents able to contribute? What do you have saved up and are you working/will you work this summer? Would you live on campus at Temple?
Yeah, I did all that but I still don’t know what to do. What school would you choose if you were in my position?
Stern. Temple definitely not worth the loans, so it’s Stern or CC.
You can’t borrow 14k each year on your own. Your parents would need to co-sign or they would have ro borrow themselves with PLUS loans. And if they are going to do that, the family would probably come out ahead just buying you a used car so you can commute to your local CC. Think that option theough too.
Did you get aome financial aid from both of these places? What is each package? Why just NYU and Temple? Did you have any other more affordable option?
I got financial aid yes. NYU gave me 47,000 a year plus work study makes it 50,000. That’s out of the 64,000 tuition (if i get cheaper housing). Temple gave me 5000 merit scholarship, plus the federal grant, plus a PA state grant, plus work study so 15,000 out of the 28,000 tuition. Temple was supposed to my affordable option. Spelman was my second option but they gave me no money. Lincoln gave me nothing as well. Was surprised but not very surprised. I’m still waiting on Howard but they have been having so many protests lately and their financial aid package doesn’t come out until after the May 1st deadline. I avoided applying to the in-state schools that most people from my high school were going to because I’ve had very bad experiences in high school. CC is reasonable but like I said I’d rather not.
@chiandrics if the difference is only a $1,000 dollars between the two then I would go with NYU, but I’m also bias. My daughter got into Temple last year and I would have been paying a little over $30k a year. Which is more than I’m paying for NYU. It’s probably best to tak with your parents and if they are letting you decide then go with your heart.
All else equal or nearly equal, Stern.
Stern is 10x better lol you’ll make it back after graduating
Stern given that the needed loan amounts are similar. Get a small fan and go to the library on hot days or evenings. Some of what you are saying doesn’t make a lot of sense (being able to afford Stern or Temple but not able to afford a used car for CC) but it sounds like Stern has given you good aid package if all you need to contribute is $15,000 loan. Hopefully you will make decent money in the summer via your Stern connections.
