I was accepted to Oberlin today and was wondering if I should go there. My first choice was nyu but I was deferred to general studies. Basically what I'm asking is in the end should I go with nyu's prestige and connections even if that means I have to go through general studies for two years or can I have four normal college years at oberlin and still be proud coming from a good, not as prestigious, undergraduate school. I know most of you probably go to nyu so will probably tell me to choose it, but please give me an actual reason why I should. I am majoring in creative writing if that helps.

i don't see how gsp would make for abnormal college years really...it's only your class options that will be restricted, but who cares you're at nyu!!...check out www.princetonreview.com ...oberlin is actually ranked higher than nyu there..

i agree with nascosi but don't base your school on rankings..they're crap. they're based on things like retention rate (which we know a lot of people are not cut out for ny and leave) and how much money alumni donate (which is very low at nyu compared to most schools on nyu's level) and lots of other stupid things

NYU and Oberlin are about as different as two colleges can get. If you're interested in both, only you can decide which is the better fit for you. Do you want to be in a large university in a large urban center? Do you want to be in a small school in a VERY rural, middle of nowhere, setting? Do you want diversity? It also depends on what you want to study. Oberlin is renowned for their music programs. I'm guessing that's not what you're going for if you were referred to GSP at NYU because they wouldn't do that to a music major at Steinhardt. When it comes down to it, both are very good schools but it's the peripheral considerations which may factor into your decision.

I just noticed you said creative writing was your intended major. I'm not familiar with Oberlin's program for that but NYU does not have a creative writing major, it's a minor only.

Oberlin has an excellent creative writing program - check out their website at http://www.oberlin.edu/crwrite/ if you have not already seen it.

As matth points out, it is a VERY different kind of place than NYU. My daughter is at Oberlin and I advise everyone who asks that they really need to see it in person before deciding to spend four years there. It is not a good fit for everyone, but some people (like my daughter) simply love the place and couldn't imagine going elsewhere. Try to visit during accepted students week if you can and I think you will know whether it is the right place for you.

Though I'm not 100% on this, I'm pretty sure you can't major in Creative Writing at NYU.

thank you for your responses
I will definitely visit both colleges, so if you could tell me things to be on the lookout for when I visit it would be greatly appreciated
Sorry about the confusion. I actually put down English as my major for NYU, I first posted this message on the Oberlin board and just changed some things
