Please help me finish up my college list.

Hey guys, so I have been busy with applying to colleges and taking the SAT's for the past couple of months. I've recently come up with a list of colleges that I am interested in. but the problem is that there are way too many of them and I'm having trouble shortening the list. Feel free to tell me a college you think will fit me, that could replace something on my lise. I need a decent balance of reaches, low reaches, matches, and safeties. If you could please help me, here are my stats, followed by the colleges I have on my list;

GPA-
UW- 2.7/4
W- 2.8/4
Rising trend, double curriculum, essays explain why my GPA is so low.

SATs'
Still waiting for results, taking again in December. Hoping for 1200-1300/1600, 1800-2000/2400.

EC's (not many)
Varsity Wrestling- 4 years
Varsity wrestling captain- 2 years
Student Government Treasurer- 1 year
2 time nation wrestling place winner
Debate club- 2 years
Fitness Club founder- 2 years
Worked for a plumbing contracting company- 3 summers
Worked for a gym- 1 summer

Pretty good essays explaining my situation well. For colleges that take them I'm pretty sure my recommendations are great.

Majors I'm Interested in-
Philosophy- First Choice
Psychology- Second Choice
(Willing to consider others.

Goal- Want to go to Law School after college. So internships and a good name would be a good bonus.

What I want in a college-
Social campus, with good student life
MUST have dorms
MUST be co-ed
Distance from where I live, (NY) is not too important
Greek Life would be nice
Good-decent academics and professors

Colleges in order of first choice, ect....
1- Rutgers
2- SUNY Binghamton
3-Maryland
4-Delaware
5-Penn State
6-FSU
7- Brandeis
8- NYU
9-Saint Johns
10-SUNY buffalo
11-Hofstra
12-Fordham
13-Ithaca
14-Hunter
15-Queens
16-CSI
17-Brooklyn

I thinks that's all. Thanks so much!

Your ec’s are good and your gpa is kinda low but if you score well on your sats you’ll be fine! What did you get on your last sat? Oh and if your essay is good that also helps!

Thanks but I need help cutting down the list more than my chances of getting in. But thank you anyways!

UMD and nyu will be reaches, not sure about the rest

You have a pretty bad GPA, but everything else is good. I’m guessing you explained your GPA?

KEEP- low-reach: You have a good chance at getting into Rutgers,

KEEP - match: Same pretty much as Rutgers, but since you’re in-state and SUNY Binghamton has lower SAT scores, you have a better chance.

KEEP - reach: Maryland is a great school if you want to go into law, since it is just outside of DC. Also, it has fantastic student life and greek life. It is far from NY, but not too far. It is a reach given your GPA, and since a lot of students come from in-state and do ED. However, if you get in, it’s a great opportunity.

CUT - reach: Delaware is kind of in the same boat, but not that close to any major city. I would take it off your list, since it’s around the same as Maryland, but it has less interning opportunities and is in the middle of nowhere.

KEEP - reach: Penn State is a great school and has great campus life.

CUT - NYU is definitely a reach for you, but it doesn’t have great student life and the campus is mixed with the city, so it’s hard for a lot of students to adjust to that kind of college setting. I think you should cut it from your list. Your GPA and expected SAT scores are much lower than its average and it doesn’t seem to be what you’re looking for.

I don’t really know much about any of the other schools, but I would cut:
Brooklyn, Saint Johns, Fordham, Ithaca, CSI. They’re all matches-safeties, maybe with the exception of Fordham, but they don’t seem to give you want you want in a college experience.

Like I said, your GPA is awful, but if you explained it well, then you should do well in all these schools.

Alright thank you!! I’ll use that advice! I forgot to mention, the reason I’m applying for nyu even though its such a reach is that I have a legacy there that might help me. If anyone else has some advice too, that would be greatly appreciated

What’s your parents’ budget (out of pocket/before any loan)?
That should help cut some schools :)

I’m pretty sure budget isn’t really a problem.

bump-help please

Brandeis would be a major reach for you. You would need outstanding essay, demonstrate interest by campus visit and interview.

I understand that. It is my highest reach I believe, so I am working on coming up with the best essay I can for it, and I’m doing my best to show interest. I will hopefully be visiting soon. thanks!

OP, make sure budget isn’t really a problem by asking your parents how much money they are planning to give you each year of college. Lots of seemingly wealthy parents expect their child to somehow pay for college, others will only pay for college if the student goes to their list of colleges, so have that conversation now.

Your GPA is a major concern for me, and I’m not at all optimistic that one can explain the reason it’s so low and still get into Penn State, Brandeis, or NYU. UMD loves SATs, so that will help you there. And all this is contingent on your getting the SAT you expect. I hope you

You have enough academic safeties, presumably, that you should have somewhere to go next year if your parents will pay for it.

Professional and graduate schools will not care where you went to school, for the most part, but how you did there. Your GPA needs to be 3.5 and above to go to a law school that will give you a chance at getting a job. I don’t recommend your choice of professions right now, but you can address that in a couple years.

Alright thanks! I’ll take all of that into consideration.

I do not believe all of these have much Greek life – in particular Brandeis and CSI.

Yah well CSI is a safety that I wouldn’t stay in for long. I’d try to transfer after a year or two. As for Brandeis, Greek life isn’t that important to me that I’d count a good school out just for that.

Bump

Make sure your parents have 45KX4 set aside for you for college, or can pay that much out of income.

1- Rutgers = reach
2- SUNY Binghamton = reach
3-Maryland = match (depending on major, can be reach)
4-Delaware = match (depending on major, can be reach)
5-Penn State = reach
6-FSU = reach
7- Brandeis = out of reach
8- NYU = out of reach
9-Saint Johns =match
10-SUNY buffalo = match
11-Hofstra= match
12-Fordham= reach
13-Ithaca = match (if full-pay)
14-Hunter = match
15-Queens = safety
16-CSI= safety
17-Brooklyn = safety

Thanks! Well I already removed Ithaca and fordham. I’m considering taking off Delaware or FSU.

Bump. Just removed CUNY queens
