Can people be truly original?

Some argue that there is a lack of genuine originality in this world. It may seem true as many a time we find books or movies that somewhat resemble each other or electric gadgets with similar designs. However, prevalence of emulation does not mean that originality is impossible and non-existant. The famous scientist Galileo Galilei and Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind, both embody the true spirit of originality.

Galileo, who came up with the theory that the velocity of a falling object is not related to its weight, clearly demonstrates that one can be truly original. Before the publication of Galileo's revolutionary theory, the widely accepted theory was proposed by the then unquestionable sage, Aristotle, who asserted that "a 10-pound iron ball will fall faster that an 1-pound iron ball". However, after conducting thousands of experienments, Galileo, an unknown physicist at that time, suspected that Aristotle's theory was flawed. With further research and painstaking calculation, Galileo finally proposed a theory that was totally different from his precedent, Aristotle's and was truly original at that time. Galileo proved his hypothesis by dropping two iron balls of different weights from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to the groud in front of the public.When two balls hit the ground at exactly the same time, the long-held assumption was shaken and a new theory was born. Galileo's theory is no imitation of his precedent's and was genuine original. His independent and critical thinking allowed him to dicern the right from the wrong,thus, proposing a truly novel theory that is different from the existing ones.

Similarly,Margret Mitchell, who wrote Gone with the Wind from a novel perspective, manifests that genuine originality is possible. Proceeding the publication of Gone with the Wind, all literature works regarding the issue of slavery in America put the South under a negative light. However, Mitchell, who grew up listening to various stories about the South, chose to depict the South in a positive and appreciative tone instead of a denouncing one, in order to delineate the intricate relationship among the Southerners and to reveal the human aspect of the slave-owners who had always been portrayed as cold-hearted and cruel. Mitchell's approach to the slavery issue and her attitute towards the South opened a totally new path which no one had travelled on before. There is no reason that we deny her originality or dismiss Gone with the Wind as a mere repitition of a past work. Mitchell's independent thinking enables her to see the same issue from a different angle and thus produced a truly original work that shed new light on the issue.

In conclusion,as demonstrated in the above examples, Galileo and Mitchell are both truly original because they are able to critically assess the influence from their precedents and independently create their own appraoches.People can be truly original as long as they do not give up their ability to make critical and independent judgement.

my writing skills are really poor..thanks for taking your time to help me..all the best for those who are taking SAT this saturday!!

I would give you an 11 or even a 12. The essay is very well structured and you use two examples, but you are very specific with these examples. Your essay is also very convincing and the paragraph regarding Gone with the Wind is also captivating in that its kinda controversial, but you still do a great job in showing how the author displayed originality. The hook was also really good which led up to the examples you will use.

probably around 6-7. you can’t just give two examples and call it good. Give deeper analysis and personal stories; that will greatly improve your score. For an example of deeper analysis, possibly talk about what it means to be creative/individualistic in our society today. Is our society really more accepting then the ones 1000 years ago?

thanks for your encouragement…but i personally doubt this will get an 11…lol…i am not sure how to present my examples; they seem to be a bit convoluted and verbose…

oops… that is really a low mark…but i am glad that you pointed out my flaws.is it possible to just present 2 cases in SAT essay? i saw some 6 mark essays with 2 or even 1 eg only… how do you think i may improve on the substantiation of egs? thank you !

@collegebound

I hope you realize the standard for the essay on the writing section is way below that of a high school english class. Two solid literary or historical examples with a brief explanation as to how they are relevant to the question is more than enough to score at least a 10 on the essay (I’ve followed this model for both the May and March exams, and I wouldn’t couldn’t consider myself some english genius by any regard).

As for OP, its at least ten, any one else who tells you otherwise is scrutinizing an impromptu essay more than they should be.

@askjeeves
Wow…thank you so much!!I got only 9 last time with a single example…okay i will follow this model too!! just wanna aks if my examples include too many unnecessary details? Thank you!!
