Please help me help my parents!

Okay, there’s a real conflict here. First, the good news: There are some really good match colleges located in Pennsylvania. You say you are visiting one of them very soon. Hopefully, it is located on a secluded campus in a green and leafy part of the state. Emphasize the safe and low-crime aspects of the situation. Maybe, consider applying to an all-women’s college like, Bryn Mawr. It also sounds - although you have not said so explicitly - as if you could be from a working class background. Upper-middle class Asian families seem - from my experience - obsessed with getting their child into the Ivy League and your parents do not fit that stereotype. That’s actually a blessing in disguise. If your parents’ combined income clocks in at <80k a year, you could be eligible for substantial need-based financial aid and probably little in the way of loans.

At some point, you will need your parents’ assistance in running the actual numbers, but, not right now. Take it a little at a time. First sell them on the security issue and the fact that letting you get a head-start on attending a good 4-year college of your choice has its practical benefits in giving you the financial security (again, there’s that word) that will enable you to take better care of them in their old age.

I can relate to you, I was in a similar situation. I just told my parents I was applying for scholarships and had my mom fill out the FAFSA. Can you target schools within a two or three hour drive of your home? That would make it more palatable for them. Depending on where you live, Penn State / Honors College, U Penn, Lehigh, Lafayette, Dickinson and other small liberal arts colleges are all a good bet. If you are in the western part of Pa, there are some great Ohio schools that would likely offer you merit. I would try not to get them too involved, certainly not at looking at EFCs. Can your school guidance counselor help you? I am sure mine got me into Lehigh with a lot of aid. Good luck to you!
