very simple, take latin this summer and next year. That will be the end of yur verbal score issues for next cycle.

My son got one, maybe two, wrong answers on the verbal section...but -- and I kid you not -- one word that he got correct he heard from the Saturday Morning Zoo rebroadcast on the local radio station ("egress") and he had figured out its meaning from the context. Another word he picked up on the weekend before from TV as being a great insult to his use on his little sister ("incorrigible"). If the exact same test was a week earlier, he would have had twice as many wrong. I think that's the difference between 99% and something like 88%. Then again, he might have missed one because he laughed out loud when he saw his new favorite word, incorrigible, was on the test. He didn't end up doing the "What's your favorite word?" essay for Exeter, but I was pretty sure that that's the word he would have picked and I about cringed. Instead, he picked the "Look out a window of your house" essay and now my abject failures at landscaping and lawn maintenance are known to people outside of my neighborhood.

D'yer , I know a kid who got egress based on latin. That is interesting to see that word outside the confines of planning the construction of a commercial building.

hah i agree with taking latin too! my friend does it and i do french. she got a 98%. i asked her how to get a verbal score that high and she said to learn a bunch of suffixes/roots/prefixes! so yes, i'm going to learn latin this summer! =]. on the test, i noticed that many of the words could be easily figured out if i just knew how to break it down.

dancer, those scores are a HUGE improvement. Congratulations! What was your overall score?

they were 82%...overall

That's a great score! Congratulations.

Hi ~ student at Andover:) My sister is applying for 9th grade this year to many schools and not only do I understand her anxiety, I also sympathize with it as I have gone through the journey myself. You can only hope for the best. I mean when I was applying, I was A WRECK...I mean you really should've seen me. I WAS OBSESSED. One day I though HEY~! I have a pretty good chance, I did well on my SSAT, I wrote great essays, I'm was the top student, along with many extracurricular (Boston Ballet, National Longfellow Poetry Committee, Harvard Geography Bee, Student Council) and then, I thought about the kids who could pay full tuition and their parents could buy their way - the upper-class society. COUGH (jerks) Anyway, I don't want to burst your bubble but I doubt that anyone who is applying DOESN'T play a sport and/or possess a love for music or art. You can be great at your school, but at Andover there always seems to be someone who is better. Doubtless, you are swimming in a small pond. Although you do sound like you know what you

Dancer, whether you get in or not, congratulations on your scores! The improvement shows your "tenacity" ( that's a word that will show up on a vocab test sooner or later!! )
