Please help me select a college for computer science undergraduate course

Hi everyone

This is my first post on this forum . .

I have been accepted into:

University of Waterloo, Canada
University of Wisconsin Madison
Purdue University
Texas A and M University

The results for the following are yet to come out:

University of British Columbia, Canada
McGill University
Cornell University
Georgia Institute of Technology
Nanyang Technological University
National University of Singapore
University of Washington Seattle

Please help me out regarding which one would be the best option for computer science undergraduate course.

Thanks!

guys please help . . .

Where do you intend to look for work after graduation?

You have listed universities in three different countries. Are you a citizen of any of those countries, and if so which? Do you also already have permanent resident status in any of the other countries?

How much money do you have available to pay for your education?

i am from india . . . .

so i am not a citizen of any of these countries . .

I will be enrolling as an international student. I can afford a maximum of $40,000 a year (plus minus $1000-2000).

I don’t have permanent resident status in any one of them.

Where would you like to work after you graduate?

If the answer is India, then you need to find out which of these is going to be better recognized in that job market.

If the answer is Canada, then one of the Canadian universities. Not only are they less expensive than their US peers, it is much easier to get work permission while you are a student, and much easier to get a work visa once you graduate.

If the answer is the US, re-read the bits above about India and Canada. It is very difficult to get a work visa for the US. Do not count on getting a job here.

If the answer is some other country, then you need to do a bit of research about that particular job market.

In order - of where I would go to - from your list
Cornell
Wisconsin
Washington
Purdue

I am interested in working in the US. Is it really difficult to get someone to sponsor your H1 B visa??

Some others that I know who went from India who first did their undergraduate studies from US have then worked there for more than 8 years and that guy has also moved onto join the Tuck Business School for his MBA. . . .

Getting a job is crucial for me as there will be some component of a loan that I will have to repay . .

@amghspa

Isn’t Georgia Tech also rated highly?

It is extremely difficult to find an H-1B visa sponsor. For fun reading on that topic, visit the International Students Forum.

I have to say from personal experience three of my cousins came from India to college here. One was an electrical engineer, other two computer science. All three have secured well paying jobs, h1 b visas and went on to get their green cards.

So yea to finish my incomplete thought if you go to a decent to good college and you’re a good student you should be fine in the US.

so which college would you rate in the decent to good category??

btw you can pretty much understand how important it will be for me to have a job there for atleast 6-7 years to be able to repay the loan that i will take . . .

so choosing the best college option is indispensable . …

I still haven’t got an answer to what would be the order of preference for the universities that i have listed . … .

Look, everyone has a friend, or a cousin, or a neighbor’s cousin’s friend who managed to find a visa sponsor here. BUT that doesn’t mean this will work for you. Do not borrow money to study in the US with the expectation that you will be able to get a job here after graduation that will allow you to pay off that loan.

i am from india . . . .

============

Is the loan that you’ll need to get to supplement the $40k? Or is the loan part/all of the $40k?

How much in CASH (family funds) and you contribute each year? How much do you need to borrow each year?

Schools like Purdue, GT, and TAMU aren’t going to give you financial aid, so you’d be paying all costs. Is $40k going to cover all that Purdue expects int’l students to provide proof of funds? How about the other schools?

Cornell costs more than $40k. As an int’l, you probably have to show funds for about $60k.

the total cost for 4 years will work out to be approx. $180k . . .

from that i will require about $80k in loans and i will be able to pay about $100k from my own funds . .

so i will basically be taking a loan of $80k . . .

i dont think i will be borrowing each year, i will borrow only after the first 2 to 2.5 years

thing is do you guys think that there is a chance that it might not work out and i may end up in a spot with a massive loan?

because to fund the $100k my family is using up nearly every disposable resource . .

please help!!

No undergraduate degree on the planet is worth USD 80k in debt. You do not want to do this. The answer is No. Plain, and simply, No.

You can read up on what happens in the US when students from here find out that they can’t afford to pay back their loans at [Project on Student Debt: Home](http://www.projectonstudentdebt.org) Click on the tab labeled “Voices”.

okay . .

these stories seem pretty terrifying to say the least . . .

guess it might not really be worth it . .

if you have any other inputs or insights please do help . .

i don’t want to end up with a debt that i cannot repay!!

You might consider reapplying to schools that give intls merit for stats.

What are your stats?

You shouldn’t have more than about 30k in debt and your parents should not be spending all savings on college. Besides with debt you would not be able to help them later if that was the plan. Your earnings can’t go to living expenses, debt, and helping your parents…if that was the plan.

my stats are pretty decent . .

SAT 1 - 2210
SAT 2 - Phy, Chem, Math level 2 all 800
TOEFL - 107

GPA 4.0 (unweighted)

loads of extra - curriculars . . . .

but the deadlines for most school have already passed . .

and yeah the plan is pretty much what you figured . . .
