Please help me understand what my chances are

I usually dont like asking these types of questions because see so many of them but as i check out the gpa averages for NC state i get very different numbers. For example, college board says 93% of their students have a gpa of 3.75+ but the Naviance Site says that NC state has taken students with a average gpa of 3.2 (granted this only calculates my school's alum).

So ill just tell you my stats and hopefully you can give me some confirmation to my thoughts on my chances for this school. It would be greatly appreciated.

Maryland Resident: I noticed some people here mentioning the prestige of their highschools so i guess its worth mentioning. I attend a public school but it is nationally ranked top 200 and top 10 in maryland. idk if this makes a difference but i doubt it.
ugpa 3.26 :( wgpa 3.9 :/
sat 720 M 590 CR 550 W
act i will take it sept
i have a decent amount of ecs

I just really want a ball park or a prediction(for lack of better word) to what you think my chances are by looking at my gpa and sat at this pride filled institution, NC State.

What do you want to major in? I say you are 65& to 80% IN, mainly depending on your major

Well i want to major in Engineering, thats one of the big reasons im looking into NC state but i realize the college admissions officers dont care about your intended major when admitting students. but thanks for your answer

My niece is going there and they do look at your major unless you’re undeclared or FYC as they call it there. She was accepted into her major and historically engineering typically has one of the toughest admission standards. I would call admissions or visit their engineering page to confirm stats. Good luck to you.

NC State does look at your major.

I think that you are definitely in to NC State. However, you should also look at some better schools than NC State. Are you going to apply to Maryland, which has a great engineering program? Jackuk

ok that’s my mistake. I have
a niece who was placed in a major with a concentration. I don’t understand how that happened if it wasn’t looked at during the
admission process. I also thought the design majors had to submit a piece of work. Maybe I’m confusing with another school.

At NC State you do apply to your major. Your acceptance or denial is directly connected to what major you apply to. A very good student who applies to the School of Engineering could be denied admission while a student of lesser caliber who applies to the College of Forestry may be admitted. If you are accepted, the letter you receive will say what college you were accepted into.

Out of state acceptance is very competitive. Your SAT scores are good, but I would take it once more to improve your math and writing.

You mention that you have decent EC’s, but are any of them leadership (ie president, vice president, founder of any clubs, captain of sports team, etc)? Often it is the quality of your involvement, not just the quantity.

Your grades seem good but definitely aim for all A’s this year. Depending on when you apply or if you are waitlisted, nc state WILL look at your senior grades and they matter… a lot!

Have you taken challenging courses (honors, AP, dual enrollment)? Make sure you take challenging courses your senior year too.

PS what are you trying to major in? If nc state is really where you want to go, it may benefit you to apply to an easier college (CHASS for example) than a very competitive one (engineering or Poole college of management)

I’ll be a freshman at state next month. Good luck with your application!

@JackUK: Yea im definetly applying to Maryland, though im also looking into OOS schools because i wouldnt mind a change in setting
@PackMom: thank you for your warning, i thought that schools in general dont consider your major when admitting you, like Maryland CP. I will have to call up the admin counselor for confirmation
@collegegirl95: unfortunetly i would not be happy in NC state unless i am in the engineering program because other than location and sports/pride, their engineering program is what attracts me a lot
@every1: srry for the late reply but i greatly appreciate all your input! :)
