please help me with my case!!! ( probably the worst case ever...)

I am sincerely looking forward to responses that can really help me

dealing with my somewhat complicated situation.

I go to SUNY Binghamton majoring in accounting

currently I have 47 credits from 3 semesters of classes and will return to school

in spring semester to finish up my sophomore year.

I am considering transferring to top 10 business schools

my question is, I am planning on sending my applications in spring semester of

Junior year ( by then i will have 89-95 credits) because I am constantly improving

my GPA since i messed up badly in my freshmen year. Expected GPA at the end of Junior

year is 3.4. Will having taken too many classes(credits) in my current school reduce chances

of getting admissions given the same credentials? If so, I am thinking about sending

applications in Fall of Junior year with lower GPA.

1) To put it in a simple way, it's 3.2 GPA with 78 credits VS. 3.4 GPA with 94 credits.

Which one would be better?

2) Also like I mentioned above, I did poorly in my freshmen year when I was taking

pre-business courses such as micro, macro, stat, calc and financial accounting.

I am thinking whether I should retake those courses and get A's to show that I have

become a hard working student and i am improving. I know when you transfer to business

schools they place strong emphasis on grades received from those pre-business courses so

that is another reason for retaking. Or, should I just take upper level courses of those

pre-business courses?

3) Lastly, even though my GPA will be around 3.2 - 3.4, I started out my freshman year

with a 2.0 GPA. Since then I started getting couple of A's and from now on I am and will

get A's in my classes. Will schools like my case? starting out badly but dramatically

improving.

Thank you everyone for taking time to read this!

"Also like I mentioned above, I did poorly in my freshmen year when I was taking

pre-business courses such as micro, macro, stat, calc and financial accounting."

That’s probably not good, because from what I have read, schools look at how you did in the courses which pertain to your major, then they look at your GPA and everything else.

Why not just finish at Bing? You will have to spend 2 years at any school to get their degree and you will not be an attractive candidate having jr year.

Suny Bing is a damn good accounting school and you have an equal chance to do well after graduation. Make sure your major fields have good grades, you will be fine.

Btw, why you call Fin. Accounting PRE- Business? It is the first accounting course in your major and you screwed it up? What did you get for Intermediate accounting then? also those two econ courses are part of your majors too, how did you screw them up as well?

thank you guys
the reason why i am planning to transfer is that I don’t think I will be
able to secure a job with that GPA when it comes to recruiting
and I always wanted to study at top business schools

I know my transfer chances are low but I am just giving it a shot
If it doesn’t work out, fine then I will do what i can at Bing.

But right now I am focusing on transferring and seeking for some advice
Thank you for your responses Han0947, Redroses and artloversplus.

I still need some advice to those 3 major questions I stated above
and I will really appreciate it if you guys give me your thoughts on those.

by the way, what i mean by this

“I know when you transfer to business schools they place strong emphasis on grades received from those pre-business courses so that is another reason for retaking. Or, should I just take upper level courses of those pre-business courses?”

is upper level courses of macro and micro econ such as intermediate micro or macro
theory calc 2 etc.

Oh and artloversplus, I haven’t taken any intermediate accounting classes so far.
Fin Acct is the only acct class i have taken. I am taking interm. acct next semester.

to be blunt, I don’t think you are ready for transfer. As an old past employee of KPMG, I know my accounting well and your gpa is built upon electives, while doing badly in your majors. That is not what the top schools want to see. If you did get A’s in managerial accounting and intermediate accounting I and II and reach the 3.4 gpa level, I’d say maybe you have a shot. But top schools don’t like to see what you did and if I were the adcom of UIUC, your app will be put aside in the first brush.

Sorry, Bing is a very good school, you will find employment if you do well and that is what you need.

Thanks artloversplus
what do you think about retaking classes or taking upper level classes of
the courses that i messed up?

I am really concerned and worried about whether I can secure a job with a 3.5GPA
from Bing because i’m an international student.
This is the major reason i plan to transfer.
My English level is more than intermediate level and I am sure by the time I graduate
I will speak fluent English with proficiency.

With A’s in managerial and intermediate acct 1,2, and 3.4GPA with 95 credits,
do you think I will have a shot at schools like Indiana, Texas, Cornell, and Stern?
I have a unique essay theme and I am taking SAT’s next year aiming for 2200<

Thank you again for you response!

With A’s in managerial and intermediate acct 1,2, and 3.4GPA with 95 credits,

-Probably not.

“I have a unique essay theme”

-So do the other 70%+ Applicants.

“I am taking SAT’s next year aiming for 2200<”

-SAT’s won’t do much for you at this point.

GOOD LUCK!

if you are looking for employment, I think gpa 3.5 for accounting and overall is good enough. I am not sure for transfer
