I will be attending Cal Poly Pomona this fall. I will be receiving around 5,000 from my pell grant and another 5,000 from my university grant. My efc is 000. Overall tuition&board is around 23,000. My subsidized loan is 3,000 and my in subsidized loan is 2,000. I recently was awarded cal Grant B which will give me around 1,500 my first year. I'm not quite sure what happens after. But I did hear that Cal Poly Pomona replace your university grant with you cal grant. I'm already in a huge debt as it is so I'm not sure how this is beneficial. I was wondering if I should apply to get cal grant a which will give me around 5,000 every year. I'm so confused please help me ):

What this means is that instead of getting a Cal Grant for $5000 (or whatever - I’m not sure of the amount) your first year, you’ll get a Cal Grant for $1,500 and a Cal Poly Pomona grant for the missing $5000. So you end up with MORE than if you had just gotten Cal Grant A. In future years, the entire amount will be in the form of a Cal Grant.

It’s confusing as heck and not explained well on the Cal Grant website, but Cal Grant B should net you more in total aid than you’d have gotten with Cal Grant A . . . which makes sense because the Cal Grant B recipients are lower income than the Cal Grant A recipients.

Don’t switch from A to B unless you think your family’s income might go up next year and make you ineligible for the B grant. (Once you’ve received the B grant, you can’t switch to A - and if your family income goes up, then you could be out of luck.)
