Can I send a college application without my guidance counselor’s recommendation letter. My guidance counselor is threatening me. What should I do? I didn’t work hard for my grades for her to ruin my chances.
I understand you may not want to share a lot of details, but it is very hard to answer your question in a vacuum. Are parents in the picture? The guidance counselor presumably reports to the principal or head of school. Threatening a student should be verboten – or do you mean the counselor won’t give you a good recommendation unless you follow the suggestions he or she has given for improving your application?
My guidance counselor says that we as students should be afraid of her because she could write anything she wants in our recommendation for colleges. My parents know about this too, but we don’t know what to do
Pffft. She’s trying to pretend to be a Marine Corps drill sergeant. Yes, she could write anything, but her job is not to torpedo the students she is supposed to help. She may be a bully, but I would not take such “threats” seriously. If she gives you a suggestion about your application or essays, follow it – or have a good reason for doing something else. If you seriously feel that she is irrational, you need to go up the line to her supervisor, but my take is that you’re overreacting. I could be wrong, but what you’re describing just sounds to me like an insecure person trying to exercise a degree of control that her own abilities don’t support.
