The problem is I am looking at UK colleges. Considering that I've also transferred between states is also an issue. Life in where I live is very different where I had been.

Race: Asian-American, or other... I could be African-American if Egypt counts though

State: IL

Age: 17

My Dad went to Wesleyan, and I would love to go there. That is one school I would really like to go to, so can anyone chance me specifically there and give me a broad picture about other schools? No schools larger than 10,000+ for undergraduate though.

Thanks, your the best.

Hi! I'll chance you, but can you chance me too? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html.

Your GPA is pretty weak, because when you convert it to a 4.0, it's a 3.2, but the fact that you're taking the hardest courseload possible may help you out a bit. Sometimes, colleges will be more forgiving if you've experienced something terrible during your high school years -- say, you've lost a loved one or your family ran into financial problems and you had to work. That also helps. Right now, you'll have a total of 5 APs by the time you graduate; I'll just note that is one the lower side of all the prospective students I've chanced here on CC. Your ACT score is also good. If you want to attend a Top 50 school, you should also take the SAT Subject. Your ECs, however, are much more impressive than your GPA, and you demonstrate leadership in them. Volunteering in NE Thailand is cool. If you picked up anything from that experience, share it with admissions in your essay and show how it opened your mind up or something like that (I wouldn't know b/c I've never done that). If you were just trying to fatten your app up, SHAME ON YOU!! (But I don't think you were ... were you??)

Overall, you seem to have tried very hard in school, but you may have run into some grade problems.

Chances:
Ivies: Very far reach (GPA)
Top 25 school: Far reach (GPA)
University of Illinois at Urbana: Reach (GPA)
Top 50 school: Reach
State University: Match
UK school: Depends
Wesleyan: Your legacy may help your admission. If your dad donated money to Wesleyan, it may help your chances even more. I can't offer you a chance, because I'm not familiar with most LACs.

--> If you're aiming for Cambridge or Oxford, forget about it. It's very difficult to gain admission to these schools --- I originally wanted to apply, but I did my research. Generally, UK schools, especially the top ones, do not like admitting US students, because students in the UK complete 13 years of study in grade school before matriculating to undergrad. In the US, you have 12 years logged in, so UK schools see US students as being behind UK students. So, usually, they only offer you an admit when you're truly special. For example, the University of Cambridge only accepts 6 high school students each year. At Oxford, they only admit ~30 US high school students. I knew someone from my high school who did get an admit to Cambridge. However, he was very smart, because he had already finished 4th year UNDERGRAD math. For starters, he had a 4.0 GPA, 36 on the ACT, a 2350 on the SAT, 12 APs, and was an USAMO qualifier. Simply put it, the kid was brilliant.

Good luck with your college search and admissions!

Thank you very much. I'm Buddhist due to my mom being Lao. She always encouraged me to go to the homeland (where in this case, Thailand). To tell you the truth I worked several internship jobs to prove to her I was worth the money to go and live there for a few months.

Your right, my GPA is pretty low. Our school isn't ranked (as of last year due to competition). I'm wondering, the fact that I moved and the fact that my father had a very, very rough time in which he received a tumor which is still being treated... is that one I should mention. I hate to say things on an application just to fatten it up, but is this truly a important one to make? I'm sure it did effect me, immensely, but I think it might cheapen the emotional strain on my family but just listing it on my application.

Also, it surprises me that so many people take so many APs. In my school we are restricted by the amount of APs due to the constraints on teaching staff.

any takers?
