Okay so I am new here but have been looking around the forums for quite sometime. I am trying to find a good school to prepare me for medical school. I do not want a Premed program. Yes I know that's weird, but I know that you don't need to go premed to get into medical school. Instead I want to major in something along the lines of Biology, Chemistry, Biochem, Bioengineering, Biotech, or Neuroscience (I know that's a lot but I just wanted to get the point across that I like all sciences but don't want to do premed.) I am a straight A student and play hockey on the varsity team. I enjoy a lot of activities, but my favorite of all would have to be kitesurfing or swimming, so as you might have guessed I'm looking for something close to a beach. I seem to do better in school when the weather is really nice, warm, and sunny so that's another reason to go to a school like this. Yes I know Ivy Leagues are good, but I would much rather go there for my med school instead of for an undergraduate school. Recently, University of Miami has become a good choice. What I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice, recommend schools, or tell me if University of Miami is a good school or not for what I want to be my major. Thanks

All those majors you refer to are common premed tracks, so I am confused. [Pre-medical - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Pre-medical - Wikipedia)

Well for what kind of degree you are talking about a lot of those research dollars got redirected to west coast institutions when the stem cell research issue was hot. I know in California UCSF is the dedicated and heavily funded medical public university/hospital/research institutions in the UC system. Its 2 blocks from Golden Gate Park which is HUGE (stretches all the way to the beach) and beautiful to fly a kite and 2 miles from the beach. What sucks is I’m not med student so have no reason to go to UCSF when it has one of the best locations! I did work at UCSF though and the surrounding Haight-Ashbury/Cole/Inner Sunset district in SF is awesome! Too bad its a grad school though :(

You are confused. You DO WANT a pre-med program if you want to apply to med school.

There is NO SUCH thing as a pre-med major. Everyone who wants to go to med school chooses a favorite major (whatever it is) and then ALSO completes the pre-med program/curriculum.

For us to help you, we need more info…

What are your stats…

GPA weighted

GPA unweighted…4.0 right?

SAT (include breakdown)

ACT

How much will your parents pay each year?

What is your home state?

I don’t think UC SF has undergrads… But, maybe things are changed or I’m mistaken.

UCSF is grad/med only, and I don’t know why it came up here in this thread at all.

There is a lot missing from this thread re your info. You should take a look at what schools have good med schools and take a look at their undergraduate programs. These schools will have the facilities and majors that will help you learn what you need for the MCAT. Keep in mind the MCAT is a culmination of all your undergrad education. It is not like the GMAT or LSAT which you can learn with a Kaplan course in a few months. You’ll want an undergrad program that really focuses on the subjects that are covered on the MCAT.
