PLEASE HELP - need advice/recs on transfer schools

Hi everyone. I currently am enrolled at my state university's honors program. I originally went there because I couldn't make up my mind (didn't get into any of my top choices), and decided not to waste my mom's money at a private school when I had no idea what I wanted. At first I thought I wanted to transfer, then I didn't, now, after a lot of thought, I seriously want to try and transfer for spring semester 06.

Basically, my biggest gripe about my school is the people. I went to boarding school, and I thought I would find similar students through the honors program. However, my experience has been somewhat negative - I consistently encounter somewhat shallow people who really have no desire to discuss anything other than the latest drunken hook up.

I like to party as much as the next person, but I would like to talk about something else. Basically, I'm looking for a smaller school (no more than 10,000 kids, preferably in the 2,000-4,000 range), with a more cohesive campus feel, preferrably an active Greek system, and with a fun social life that isn't entirely overwhelming. I've already lived away from home and learned how to entertain myself. Parties are great, but I'd like to make mix it up a bit. Also, I don't want to have to travel halfway across the country - PA, MD, DE, NJ, NY, and VA are the states I'm most interested in. Urban, rural - whatever. I'm most concerned with the student body at whatever schools.

To give you an idea, I'm looking into Lehigh, Lafayette, Washington and Lee, William and Mary, Bucknell and Dickinson. Any other ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

what school do you go to? what's your intended major? what are your stats?

I currently go to Penn State and I am in the Schreyer Honors College. I'm a business major (a bit dissatisfied with that too, but I've wasted too much time to change it). I have a 3.65 cumulative GPA for the last year (Dean's List both semesters), very solid transcript (mostly As w/ a B or two from difficult classes like stupid honors accounting). In high school, I had about a 92 cumulative average, boosted by solid freshman and sophomore grades. Jr and Sr were good grades too, just not as stellar. 710 math and 720 verbal on SATs. took Writing/US History/Math IIC SAT IIs with scores of 800/720/600. My main extra-curricular is the equestrian team - I was on my high school's (team captain sr year) and I am on Penn State's, as well. I have had 3 solid internships (one was on Capitol Hill), I've had a job since I was 15, and all of my employers, past and present, can write excellent recommendations.

hmmm, i'd suggest...

safeties (but these schools are kinda big):

u illinois-urbana champagne
indiana u-bloomington
u maryland-college park

matches:

unc-chapel hill
nyu

reaches/matches:

georgetown
u virginia
duke

Lehigh seems like a good fit for what you're looking for. Excellent business department, in PA, cohesive campus, smaller student body and definitely active greek system. Check it out.

laxmom - do you have any personal experience with the school? i visited twice when i was a high school senior (it was actually at the top of my list for awhile, but i had no idea what i wanted in the end), and loved the campus, but never spent the night, so i have no true idea of what the student body is like. any help is appreciated

also, anyone have experience with williams?

you have a solid chance at top schools

id say georgetown virginia and the like are not really reaches but rather match/reaches...in the end, it appears transfer admissions are quite random.

Check out the LACs in those states.... Colgate could work if you're willing to give up the business thing.
