Please Help - Suspension

I am pretty familiar with disciplinary issues. The fact that it is a suspension and not expulsion is huge and means the school doesn’t want to ruin things with Duke. I think there’s very little chance of Duke rescinding admission. The OP needs to work with the counselor and craft a brief statement of contriteness without making excuses. Trust me- this is not that big of a deal. There is always the risk of getting an admissions person on a bad day, though. I think it will be OK, but the OP may not be smart enough for Duke if he is dumb enough to bring illegal drugs back to boarding school 2nd semester senior year.

Is an “in school” suspension even noted on your transcript? At our school, an “in school” suspension is not put on the transcript. It is merely seen as a stern warning not to do the particular action again.

OP-Are you positive the GC is going to report an “in school” suspension to Duke? Meet with the GC and discuss what happened? Take personal responsibility and the GC may decide to keep the matter off of your permanent record.

Why does the GC ‘have’ to report it? My dad is a GC as well and told me hes under no obligation to report disciplinary infractions to colleges… Nor would he if he had such a student that got accepted ed to college. I mean a lot of h.s students smoke pot anyway (bot saying that makes it ok, but he doesnt consider it serious enough to report to a college)

I don’t think the GC is even going to report it to Duke if he can help it. It makes the school and, especially, himself look bad. After all, he promoted your application.

So man up, grovel, plead, pledge that you won’t do it again (even though you will of course - that’s pretty obvious from your posts), and join all the other miscreants at our nation’s best colleges and universities.

If you had the weed, but did not intend to use it, and never used any before, then you are too dumb for Duke. Of course you used it, and trying to claim otherwise will make your situation worse.

And for your sake, I hope you used “Duke” as a proxy for whichever other school you really did get into.

I know a boy who was admitted EA to Harvard, and then was suspended (not for drugs) and the guidance counselor didn’t report it to Harvard. However, it had to be reported to the other schools, where he was not admitted. Too bad, he had to go to Harvard!

It is in the school’s best interest not to report you. I would talk with an attorney.

Thanks for all feedback. Bump.

“If you had the weed, but did not intend to use it, and never used any before, then you are too dumb for Duke. Of course you used it, and trying to claim otherwise will make your situation worse.”

Bill Clinton didn’t inhale - and he got into Georgetown!

OP, if the amount was small enough that it is obvious it was for personal use and you were not dealing, that might make a difference. I think you will be okay. Best of luck.

Not sure how I gave too many details, but I appreciate the advice.

A few years ago, some kids I know were caught in a room with a joint on a school trip in early April. Nine of them were seniors. The school (a private school) suspended all of them for a week and informed all of the colleges that had accepted them. Only one college rescinded acceptances – Oberlin, surprisingly (since none of them would have been the first Oberlin student to have passed a joint around). Even Oberlin, however, did not rescind the admission of the one student it had accepted ED. It recognized that student had no other options, since he has withdrawn all of his other applications months before. They required that he get drug counseling and delay enrollment until the second semester, but that was as far as it went.

MN, private school, got admitted to Duke ED, I don’t think there would be that many of you out there. Just be careful what you post on the internet.

^Russian, resident of MN, private school in NC, Duke ED…

OP, I dare say you smoked pot within the past 30 days (in your lastest visit to Bingingham?), so don’t submit to a drug test. And stop with the excuses!!! You sound like a freakin’ victim.

Sounds like security must have suspected you had something or they wouldn’t have searched your room so thoroughly. Yet, it wasn’t long ago when you wrote something about hoping there’s some “good weed” at parties at Duke. If you’re asking kids for help, they’ll say “Oh, too bad…”

If you’re asking parents like me for advise, I’ll tell you your best shot is to admit you are guilty. Take the consequences. I doubt Duke will rescind their offer, but better stay clean until you graduate.

I seem to remember you asking how good the weed is at Duke on the Duke thread and thought at the time it was a stupid thing for a smart kid to write. Stop lying to yourself and us and man up. Consequences…you clearly knew what you were doing and felt it was an acceptable risk. Do your suspension and wise up.

As others have already said, OP, careful what you post on the Internet…you also posted your stats on another thread, so really someone could notify Duke and it would be easy to ferret you out.

So you were going to “get rid of” it? Isn’t that distribution? Or were you going to just give it away?

I’m not sure that’s too surprising considering some negative reactions some years back among some alums to Oberlin trying to “mainstream” itself through efforts such as trying to conform more with USNWR rankings, changing the student recruitment efforts away from “One student can make a difference” '60s hippie-ish orientation to the “Fearless” campaign some felt was “too corporate/aggressive”, etc.

Considering all that, it wouldn’t surprise me if admissions/admins at are trying to distance Oberlin from another aspect of its once hippie-ish image…the prevalence of campus weed use. Once you’ve smelled that odor…it’s hard to forget.

Just reread the OP’s post. This sounds very… odd:

Someone randomly offered you pot and you weren’t even thinking and just randomly held out your hand, accepted it, then later packed it into your bag, brought it back to your dorm room at school, unpacked it and put it away in your dorm room. Somethings smells fishy…

But as people mentioned above, grovel and hope that things will work out.

From seeing your posts about hoping the weed is good at Duke and about the very thorough search of your room, I start to wonder: how careful are you about what you post on facebook, and might your school be monitoring facebook accounts? Which they have every right to do, since it’s a public domain…

And I’m in the club of advising you to stop seeing yourself as a victim. It’s pretty obvious that this was not your first encounter with weed.

You have a very lenient boarding school. Many others would have expelled you, no graduation, then obviously no college in the fall. If you end up making it to college this fall, are you expecting your parents to pay for your college? I hope you grow up quickly and start to appreciate what is being given to you. Reading your posts has certainly made me appreciate my D and S…

“It was barely half a gram, but I didn’t think about it and I took it.”

Your ability to talk of these things in specific weights and measures implying some order of magnitude as to the offense requires some level of familiarity with the subject. As told, I would be less concerned about the quantity in your possession and more concerned about your propensity to BS. On the other hand, maybe it just means that you’ll fit right in.

Dear Ido -

See, now you’re supposed to grovel here, too. We love to pile on. ;)

I’m sure you’ll find plenty of good weed at Duke, and in larger quantities. (Not that I would know…)
