OK. So yesterday, representatives from "College X" came to visit our school during the day. Nobody from our school has ever applied to 'X' and I was planning to be the first. I signed up for the meeting. However, I didn't realize that I had a test the same time they were coming. It turned out that I was the only person who signed up. They came and no one was there. After my exam, I went to the office, but the reps already left.

I feel so bad. I think I just ruined our schools reputation with that college and maybe other colleges because I stood up the reps. Furthermore, my guidance counselor hasn't written my rec letter yet and I'm worried that he will write a bad letter as a result of this.

What do you think? How do I fix this situation? What would be the right thing to do at this point?

This situation is very common…email the admissions rep today and let him know how disappointed you were that you could not attend…and let your GC know as well…it’s fine; happens all the time…

rodney is right, it is very common and not that big a deal. D was unable to attend the visit from one of her top college choices since it conflicted with a critical test and her teacher would not make an exception. She e-mailed the Admissions Counselor that night explaining her absence. The AdCon was extremely impressed that she showed the courtesy to apologize for her absence and said that she does not often get e-mails from students like that. It may have actually worked out better for D.

Don’t worry about this- admissions counselors travel everywhere hoping to increase application numbers. One bum trip won’t ruin their week’s performance, especially not if only one student was going to show up anyway.
