GREAT Essay

WHAt are my chances at rochestor? ED to rochester and Great interview?
What about BU, Penn State, Michigan -ann arbor, suggestions for any other school?

First, are you going to need financial aid?

Next - would you consider applying to LAC's? Sometimes they are better at looking at the whole student than the uni's - and you sound like a great young person!

Are you female (good women's schools out there)?

I think you do have a shot a Rochester, with good SAT's, and if you really like the school, ED would help your changes.

You need to talk to your HS college counselor ASAP. He/she should have scattergrams showing who was accepted at which schools by GPA/class rank and SAT. I would be more concerned about the state schools because they are more numbers driven: you need to determine how your sub 3.0 GPA is going to hold up as an out of state applicant.

Other schools include Case, which is less selective than Rochester, but (IMHO) just as good a school. Any regions of the country that are preferred/out of the question?

Thanks for replyign ohio mom, for financial aid, i think about 23k would be decent and i hear rochester gives a good amount for merit such as SAT etc. which i am hoping for as well. SO in total about 25-30 k with both merit and financial aid. What are LACs?? And yea i am planning to really how my extra curricular activities, relating to my culture to bring diversity to the university, which i hear the care a lot about. And also going to show Pretty much everything except grades.

And I am a male, asian indian in NJ. Three students from last year were accepted to Rochester from my school. Our school does not have class rank, and the other two students had like a 3.2 gpa but not so much on extra curiculars that was unique besides i think one worked in a lab for the summer, and another one had a lot of sources on the Board for the University, which helped him a lottt. I want to stay in the north east, and about 5 hours from NJ. I really dont want to go ot Rutgers! Any suggesstions for other collegs? I REALLY want to go to Rochester, and any suggestions on how to improve my chances would be appreciated as well. THANKS everbody

mich is pretty much out of the question w/ ur GPA--its a national university, they realllllly care about GPA, and a lot of people have 4.0s who go there. try smaller colleges that care less about GPA and more about the person, you sound like ud add a lot to a campus, ur grades just won't get you into anywhere prestigious, however that doesn't mean you can't go somewhere good. people confuse prestigious with good. you are good and deserve to go somewhere good, revise ur list a lot.

Public institutions are typically more cut and dry on looking at GPA and SAT. A liberal arts college, or private uni, is more likely to look at the whole student. Rochester is a good choice as it is very good school, but not hyper-selective. I think this is due in part to its location - Rochester just doesn't have the appeal of, say Boston, as college town. However, if you are looking for a fine education, it is certainly a good choice.

The only problem with ED is that doesn't let you show off your new, improved senior year grades. You are also stuck with whatever aid they offer you.

hoppefully premed, and if i get deferred i am counting on sending my good grades in january. DO u think this would work? hopefully these grades will convince admissions that i can do well in school

Large public universities have to select from thousands upon thousands of applications, so it's much easier for them to go- 3.2, OUT. They have to use preliminary eliminations, like SAT/GPA, to make it easier for them to weed out some folks. I'd say:
Rochester- good chance
BU- good chance
PSU- You would get shafted on financial aid, being out of state. The GPA could kill you, also (since you're OOS)
Michigan- harder to get into than PSU, GPA will hurt you also

If you are looking for bigger schools, try the University of Maryland also. Since you're from NJ, Rutgers would be a logical choice. Ithaca might also be a good option, you'd be fine to get in there, probably with a decent amount of aid.

With my grades would you apply ED or regular decision to ROchester? I am just worried if i get rejected in ED then its all over. Otherwise i could wait it out and send in my senior grades in january, that is if i got deferred.

Here's the lowdown. The state schools are 100% stats oriented and will not be friendly to your GPA. Penn State will likely let you in to boost their SAT average, but Michigan is not going to happen. I would focus on Private schools that will be more accepting.

You are the perfect transfer candidate. My advice is to go to BU, Tulane, U Miami, whatever or a top 20-50 LAC and then get a top GPA. With a 3.8-4.0 in college, your SAT, and some good College ECs after a couple years you could end up at an Ivy. I've seen this happen many times with kids in your shoes.

If you are sure you will be able manage on wherever Rochester hands you for finaid, then you may want to apply ED. They will have access to your first quarter grades. I am not sure how generous either Rochester or BU are going to be with merit air.

Other schools you might look at: Case, Grinnell (good for merit aid). Also look at top 50-100 LAC's such as Allegheny, where your SAT and EC's have a shot of getting you in with merit aid. As premed, you will want to have top grades in college, and access to professors and research ops. You may be better served by being a big fish in a small pond, so that you come out with wonderful rec's and GPA.

You have a 2.9 or 3.0 for three full years of high school. You've set a pattern, you have an academic history. Why would you all of a sudden say you WILL get a 3.8 next semester? It's so easy to say you will do something beforehand. What makes you so sure all of a sudden things will change (not trying to be mean just realistic).

Along those same lines, you are >expecting< a 2200. Again, easy to say beforehand. If you are a senior, what scores do you have and are you being realistic?

And why did it take you till senior year to get >very worried< ? Again not trying to be mean or sarcastic, just curious.

I definietly see your point. The reason i say I will get such a gpa is because only recently have i actually started caring about college etc. And i am quite sure, that I am smart enough to do well in senior year. For the SAT, i have been practicing a lot atleast a year now. And all my practice tests lead towards that, so its not just based on pure hope. God forbid something happens on the day of the test, i see no reason why I cant aim for a score like that after takin practice tests and hittin that range. And about being serious senior year, I came to this country somewhere between 2000-2001. And this I was a huge change from where I moved from, and i really just didnt understand what was going on until junior year. i diddnt know abot the SAt or anything. Thats why only for the past two years have i realised how the admission process works blah blah and have come upon a change. This is the reason of a such a revelation. I hope this answers ur questions, and i d appreciate it if you gave ur thoughts or advice to get into Rochester. Because right now its my dream school, and I ll do anything I can in the next few months to give it all I got and hope I can fix what I have done.
