Please help with this essay prompt

I'm terrible at writing essays. Please give some help. Here is one title -
"Should modern society be criticized for being materialistic?"

Whichever side you take, what examples would you give?
Thanks much.

mmm maybe you can use 1900-1920s (Gilded Age). materialistic and money hungry monopolies caused people laborers and immigrants to suffer. but im not sure if 1920s would be considered modern :/

This is a simple topic.

Put it this way…

Define materialism first. It means comfort or association with physical things other than intellectual or creativity.

Look back to Industrial Revolution compared to the Modern Revolution that is existing in the society today. Like PolandsSprings mentioned, money making company > value of how well things are established, look like, or taken care of.

Ex: (Write about a personal experience where you once purchased furnitures for your home and you ended up cleaning them afterwards when you thought they looked fine… how it leads to businesses to make more money from consumers and keep the stores as prestigious from being the most “sold-out” items in public.) How has the creation of things during the industrial revolution of making the world better has changed to “money matter, and condition of materials is less important”. I basically think that would discourage many people.

Ex. 2: How colleges have become more convenient on prestige/rankings/money/SAT scores other than well-roundness of students who put effort into themselves. Colleges look materialistic rather than holistic at times in society today because some kids born luckily and buy their way into Harvard without SAT scores due to family legacy. It places the emphasis of physical comfort of entrance into the applicants who are less competitive than those who have done superb. Cause you don’t really have to go to top ranked colleges just because of those reasons. Many creative and intellectual people are successful even at cheaper and less competitive schools. Colleges are materialistic secretively beyond than what one can expect.

Don’t have to use my examples, but these are the ideas which I might have implemented into my essay.

i have a question. when they say “modern world” does that only mean like as of now such as 2010 or around or can i use things from like 1800s or 1900s

You can use the history to compare and contrast with the modern world when you use the ideas in your essay. Just don’t use too much. Focus more on the question addressed by the prompt.

Thanks everybody!
