hey guys

i some questions regarding the williams school

is there a sepperate application for williams ? or if i apply to W&L and say i get in, then i can choose to attend williams ? does williams have it's own fin aid office or how is it ?

thank you in advance

You do not "enroll" in the C-school (Williams) until the spring of sophomore year when you declare a major. Then all you have to do to be a C-school major is choose a major from the C-school and you're in. You can take courses from both the college and the C-school at any point in your W&L career no matter your major and can even double major with one major in the C-school and one in the College (which is what I plan to do). So don't worry on "applying" to the C-school because you can't, just apply to the University.

thank you Dima ! i sent my application today, what a relief. and now comes the waiting part. oh man, i'm so stressed about the waiting part. i want to get in so badly. i love W&L. btw, can you give me your opinion on the following :

1) i am an international student, from Romania . in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 i have participated every year at the National German Olympiad, where i always ended up in top 20 and in 2003 i obtained the 4th place and the 3rd prize for my project. now, is this considered some kind of a hook ? being a ROMANIAN and having so many national GERMAN contests ?

2) my SATs are :
SAT 1 : 640V, 660 M, 670 WR ->will retake SAT this month
SAT 2: 710 Math 1, 670 Math 2, 760 German
how is this score for W&L ? do you know what the score ranes are for internationals ?

3) my rank is 19/180 . low, i know. at my school most students take private lessons and have tutors. i couldn't afford it, so i was at a serious disadvantage, hence the low rank. will this low rank seriously affect my chances ?

4) if i send you my common application essay will you please read it and comment on it ? not that it matters right now, my application is on it's way to america right now, but nevertheless...

5) i have sent in as supplementary materials : a letter of recommendation from a German writer, the Head of the German literature club i was involved in ; a writing sample in german written for a german class about the relationship between Faust and Mephisto in Goethe's Faust ; a dear-diary type of essay where i imagine myself already a freshman at W&L and desribing why i love it , what i did on a particular day, etc ( showed very strong love for W&L).
will these help me at all ?

6) i only live with my mon, my parents divorced when i was little. we have a very low annual income ( < $ 3000) . how badly will the ability of me not being able to pay affect my chances ? i stated on the financial forms that i am willing to pay $ 1200/year, but really, that's all i can do. i don't have from where to pay...

7) now, that my application is sent, what can i do to further increase my chances ? how can i actually show the admission office that W&L is the perfect place for me and that i love W& L ?

thank you very much

I'm not an adcom so your guess is as good as mine.

I don't know what the score ranges are for internationals but your SAT I and II scores fall well in the middle range of W&L SAT scores so you should be fine assumig the rest of your app is good.

Depends, I don't know if this applies to international students but most American high schools send a "school profile" along with their students' transcripts so colleges know what average GPA is, what average SAT scores are, etc. so a lower rank from a top high school is understandable.

Adding to keeping up my GPA, ice hockey and all the other committments I have that I am about to strat pledgeship, there is simply no way I will have time to read an essay - especially not one where advice will not be of any use. Heck, I'm not sure if I'll even have time to post on CC the next 8 weeks.

Yes, those will help adcoms see who you are better. I don't know if they will help much, but they certainly shouldn't hurt. As an aside, I would love to hear some of the things you wrote in your "dear diary" essay.

You're going to have to talk to the Admissions and Financial Aid Office about that, I am not familiar with W&L's policies on international applicants - if you find out, please let me know.

Practically nothing - if you've been talking to a certain admissions officer, you might send them an e-mail thanking them for all their help and reiterating your desire to attend W&L but I doubt it will help much if at all. Just sit back and wait now and concentrate on finishing high school work.

Dima is not correct about the SAT scores. SAT II scores are definitely OK, and the WR score is OK, especially for an international, but you're in the bottom 25% for both verbal and writing. Definitely try to get into the 700s on each. As for ranking-- I was barely in the top 25% of my class (unweighted) and I had no problems. You should not worry about your rank; it's fine. As for $$ for internationals, admissions is need-blind. So, if you get accepted on your merits, they will make sure you're able to pay. I have a friend from Argentina who was going to go elsewhere, but then W&L doubled his financial aid package to suck him in here. As for what you can do to increase your chances, send ANY important or relevant updates to your admissions counselor. A lot of good stuff happened to me after I sent in my app; it's always good to let W&L know how you're doing.

Morgan - admissions is need-blind for American students for sure - but are you absolutely sure it is for internationals? I would love to know so I can answer in the future.

I'm almost positive about it. Most of the internationals here are on full scholarship. You work in admissions, right? Might want to ask them to double check.

(im an international too) i thought on the website they said "an offer of admission does not guarantee an offer of financial aid"?

That's different.

Just because you get in, does not mean you will get the aid you need - that is what you are talking about.

What Morgan and I are talking about is whether how much aid you need affects your chances of admission.

ah, i see. thank you for clarifying that :)

No problem - and Morgan, I will ask when I am in the office tomorrow.

Looks like I was right (and Morgan was wrong), admissions is NOT need blind for internationals, even though they do do their best to admit the most meritorious internationals and help them financially so they can attend - they can only accept those who we can afford to accept.

So to the OP: yes, your inability to pay will negatively affect your application (though it wont necessarily guarantee rejection)

hi there, im an international too-ve just been accepted ED2 (imitated the movies:slapmy face several times to make sure i was not dreaming ^^) I dun remember excatly what amount i put in the finaid documents but pretty sure that it was <5000 $. Still havent received any news on financial aid T_T I just want to say that since my stats are not stellar, plus my financial need is HUGE, but im still accepted, i think you dont have to worry much if uve put all yr "heart and soul" into the application :D
by the way i didnt even submit sat 2 (its not required for intels-haha im taking it tomorrow! my mom doesnt let me quit :D), my essays were full of typos >< and i never thought i had any shot :D so...
anyway all best wishes to you :) hope to see more intels in WLU this fall :D

BMFBPI, I'll have to agree with Napoleon (Morgan) on this one-you should be fine. I'm an American and I got in last year with a 670M, 660V and for the SAT IIs I had 700 American History, 650 Writing and 640 Math I. I wasn't even in the top quarter of my class in a non-competetive high school and I got in. I had a lot of extracirriculars that definately helped me get in, but you're foreign so you have at least a fair shot, if not better.

I do not look like Napoleon Dynamite, damnit. Just because I'm tall and skinny and have semi curly hair. Well, just for the record, John Heder is a very attractive man.
