Dear Financial Aid Committee,

My name is XXXX and I am writing this letter in hopes of having my ineligibility to receive financial aid for the 2014-15 years reconsidered. My grades the past two semesters do not reflect my potential and capability. Honestly, my first year of university was a lot more difficult than I anticipated and exceeded my greatest expectations. It was overwhelming and the complete opposite of what I was used to because I went to a high school that had less than 700 students.
After seeing my grades from my first semester at XXXX, I knew that I wasn’t giving it my all. I have never been so disappointed in myself. This caused me to have a lot of self-doubt, but at the same time I knew that I had to try harder because I have never failed a class in my life. I felt such a great resentment after seeing my grades from my second semester. I failed two classes my first year of university.
I have never been so determined in my life to go back to school so that I can prove to myself that if I just gave it my all and then some that I can get the good grades I need in order to succeed in life and to get back on my own good graces.
Steps that I will take to ensure that I will make Satisfactory Academic Progress in the future are as follows:
• My only priority will be school. I will put everything else in my life on hold because it is not as important as my education.
• I will keep contact with all of my instructors and ask for help if there is something I do not understand as well as check on my grades constantly.
• If I were to still have trouble with class materials, I will hire a tutor.
• I will try to participate in school activities so that I can meet people who would make excellent study partners.

What I have gained from failing two classes my first year is a great head on my shoulders and determination.
Please know that I have reevaluated myself as well as how I will do things this upcoming semester. My future is the only thing that is important to me right now. My future is paramount. Please allow me a second chance to redeem myself. I know that I can achieve an academic excellence and prove to be a model student.

Thank you for your consideration,

First lets clarify this: FAFSA doesn’t give out money. FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It’s an application only. The Federal government collects financial information about you on the FAFSA application to see if you qualify for federal funding. Many students don’t qualify for federal funding. So, that information is sent to the colleges.

The Financial Aid office at your university dispenses their own dollars based on your eligibility for scholarships, grants and loans. So address your appeal to the Financial aid office.

Additionally, you haven’t made yourself accountable in your appeal. You’ve used the terms: “I will”. . . . . … What they want to hear is: “I have . . . . .” You have to have concrete goals that show who, what, when, why and how all of these improvements will change your lower grade.

“I have made appointments with the tutoring center and will be attending sessions there on Tues and Thursdays with a graduate student tutor named: _________________________________________”

(How are you going to keep in contact with your instructors?)
“I have amassed a list of the instructors, as well as their graduate assistants, and their emails such that I am completing a calendar of events for each week of the semester and keeping a log of activities”

Please don’t use my suggestions. Make up your own:)
