Assignment: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority?
Yes, it is important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority. If people hadn’t questioned authority throughout history, we may not have been able to take liberty and justice for granted today. This can be proven in Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” promoting women’s rights and in ¬¬the uprising of the French bourgeoisie during the French Revolution.
In Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” written regarding the struggle for suffrage in America. In her speech, Sojourner mentioned that she didn’t need somebody to carry her into a carriage like “that man over there” had suggested she did. She, in fact, outlined the heavy items she could carry and the many tasks she could complete just as efficiently as men could. The man she was referring to represented the male citizens with the power to vote who had continued to repudiate requests of women’s suffrage. If Sojourner hadn’t persuaded the men and shown them that women had the same capabilities of men, the women’s suffrage movement may have been prolonged and weakened.
The French bourgeoisie, who represented more than 95% of the French society, were enervated of having minimal representation in the government and its decisions. They had been mistreated, abused, and were indignant of having to work on the estates of the wealthy for little pay. After paying a land tax to the king and giving 10% tithe to the church, the bourgeoisie was left with little money to fend for themselves. In revolt, they formed the National Assembly and attacked the Prison of Bastille and manors of the wealthy to form a new radical government in Paris. Without the uprising of the bourgeoisie against the wealthy upper class, documents protecting the rights of the people, such as the Declaration of Rights wouldn’t have been written.
In conclusion, it is important to question the ideas of people in authority. This can be shown in the bourgeoisie efforts during the French Revolution as well as Sojourner Truth’s speech defending the capabilities of women. Evidently, questioning ideas has ineffably changed society for the better.
