I've heard a variety of opinions of my chances of getting in, and none of which were well-informed. UB is my top choice and I have been stressing for months debating to myself and others if I could get in or not. I would like to ask YOU, people who got accepted and others that know of Buffalo's standards, to tell me exactly how it is.
Thanks.

GPA: 84/100 total (2.9/4.0?), 78/100 academic
SAT: Critical Reading 490
Math 450
Writing 540
940/1600, 1480/2400
3 extracurriculars (activities and clubs, I mentioned on the resume that these included community service to an extent, but who knows if that will matter)
"Impressive" essay (as others had told me at least)
Class rank 151/250 (ouch! not even in the top 50%!)
NY state resident

I don't know what your chances are, but I wanted to post just to inform you that a 84/100 does NOT translate to to a 2.9... It's more likely to be ~3.36.

I've talked to many people on the GPA 4.0 scale conversion issue...I really don't know what it is on the 4.0 scale because of all the mixed opinions I get

Anyway, onward with this thread telling me my chances! My confidence as well as any student reading this with similar grades rest in your hands!

Your gpa is considered UB material. However with your sat score it'll be a stretch. You have a 940/1600, average UB sat is 1100. You might get in, but I wouldn't rely on it. When I mean rely I mean apply to some lower sunys as safetys. In all honesty I'd say you have a 50-50 shot of getting in. Unfortunately only "real" factors about UB is gpa and sat. A secondary factor would be the supplemental essay. Unless you have some kind of "hook" I'd say your stuck at a 50% chance.

Ouch! I'll be completely honest with you, I doubt you'll get in. But there are a few things you can do. First, go on as many college tours as you can and get connected with the staff. Exposure helps you a lot (that's what I'm doing with the Honors Program- I'm on first-name terms with the director!) The other thing is, have you considered going to a community college for a semester or two? UB, like all SUNY schools, has general education requirements that are pretty basic- English, Math, Science, etc. I would suggest you do that first if you're not accepted, then transfer in. That way would give you a little time to get your grades up, and if you transfer after a year (I think), they don't look at your high school grades. And don't be deterred by the "community college image." Just think of it as a stepping stone to UB.
