"i wana convince my parents that i can do it "

Why are your parents stopping you from doing it? Are they concerned about application fees and such?

What are you applying for?

Expand your schools and you will prolly get into one of them.

You seem like a person who’ll be successful wherever you go.

@dasadhikarik yes they are concerned with fee and moreover the test fee was also too much so they think if i not get into it will be waste. Moreover i dont feel like being at IIT it prolly doesn’t suits me, which my parents have taken over prestige. Also i want to go to the colleges as mentioned above because i want to study asronomy which in india no institute provides ( astronomy is a science branch not engg. and is diff from aerospace and aeronautical ). So, its kinda imp for me to choose school where i will for sure get admitted and has good financial aid option. So, after shortlisting i found four. So please do tell me of my chances so I can access my stand.

@sciencenerd, thanx for reply ( your name sounds good ) i am applying for astronomy . I want to go in research field and far too interesting I have vision which others ( most of them) don’t understand… :frowning: and i really want to get in one of those so i can show others my vision. and thanks for compliment.

@dasadhikarik can you send me your email id @ chauhanbhimesh23@gmail(dot)com

plese reply …it’s important!!!

Have sent you my e-mail address.

@ dasadhikarik yes hv got it and replied do mail me as soon as possible

Read this on chance threads
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-accurate-chance-mit.html</a></p>

No one can predict chances, there are so many factors involved. Yes, you have the grades and the scores. But so do the other 1000+ applicants from India, who are applying to the top 20 colleges. What will set you apart among the others, we don’t know.

@ fall2016parent yes i have read that thread and what i really wanna know is if can i dare to see myself in the race at the least for the colleges of my choice?

please reply !!!

yes, you have the scores and the grades. So it means at least your application will get into their hands. After that, it is the subjective stuff. One thing - what kind of high school you go to. Most of the folks who get into the ivy are from the international school or the well known schools in India. Not saying that is a deal breaker. But that is what I have seen.
And do not restrict it to those 5 top colleges. Spread yourself to more safety colleges as well.
And read this post from @dasadhikarik http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/india/1408895-true-humanities-student-cant-apply-ivies.html</a> He had perfect sat scores/gpa/ECs and he got rejected from all. So yes, could be the essays, could be his region, could be his high school sending too many students…who knows what the adcoms are looking for.
So yes, chances thread make people feel better but the reality is most of these colleges are at a 6-8% acceptance rate and competition from India is severe. So put your best foot forward, have some safeties and then just wait. That is all anyone can do.

@fall2016parent- i am from Delhi Public School Agra , does that count as international? it’s a public school. so which “safety” colleges do you think should i spread to where i can get good financial aid (requisite, as i don’t want to burden my parents with my eduction issues and that too with my younger brother in tenth and his fees is too heavy upon my father.) and my subject which is astronomy (or related)…

and yes i agree that all we can do is put our best foot forward and hope and pray for best, who know one day i will be able to see one of those domes… ;)

do reply my question…

Bhimesh.
Why don’t you apply for a fee waiver?
And why are you applying to just those 4 colleges?
I read Cornell has amazing major in astronomy.
And as for the fee of application, apply for a fee waiver. Although you cannot do that for a standardized test, but definitely can, for the application fee.
And mind You, those Olympiads rank do matter
Also, chances at those 4 colleges is very random.
BE genuine and be yourself. Show and express yourself through the essays.
The look for passionate people.
They look for students who are not perfect but have scope of improvement and can give back to their college.
Right now, apply, be genuine, and add few more colleges to that list.
Your essays will make a HUGE difference so make sure you write it personal and expressive of who you really are.
Good luck

This should be of interest and might help you you too. And I quote,

American Astronomical Society

""The mission of the American Astronomical Society is to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the Universe.

The Society, through its publications, disseminates and archives the results of astronomical research. The Society also communicates and explains our understanding of the universe to the public.

The Society facilitates and strengthens the interactions among members through professional meetings and other means. The Society supports member divisions representing specialized research and astronomical interests.

The Society represents the goals of its community of members to the nation and the world. The Society also works with other scientific and educational societies to promote the advancement of science.

The Society, through its members, trains, mentors and supports the next generation of astronomers. The Society supports and promotes increased participation of historically underrepresented groups in astronomy.

The Society assists its members to develop their skills in the fields of education and public outreach at all levels. The Society promotes broad interest in astronomy, which enhances science literacy and leads many to careers in science and engineering.“”

By the way I read somewhere that MIT does not offer a major in Astronomy but you can major in physics and take lots of astronomy classes. The above list also reads,

Also try to use this search criteria as well, to find your best fit,

You can also use college data for this purpose.

You seem to want certainty. It is very difficult especially for internationals at all the schools you listed. Make sure you have options in India!

thanks to all above … can any of you please name for me few other colleges which would fulfill my requirements-
1- B.Tech in astronomy or astrophysics
2- good financial aid

preferably Australia or USA (i surely can’t afford UK)

Thanx in advance

Bhimesh,
Your stats sure are appealing but frankly, it’s literally a toss-up and can go either way.
The colleges you’re applying to are pretty bounteous with financial aid but for the same reason, they’re also very hard to get in too.
To put things in perspective, you might score a 2400 in your SATs and 800 in your Subject tests and still get rejected because of a weak essay or simply competition, keeping in mind the volume of merit students applying. IMHO, chancing someone for the Ivies is no different than taking a blind guess. Just try to work hard on your essays for now and like Rew said, try and apply for app waivers to all of these colleges. There are other need blinds too so you might want to look into those.

Also, I hate to break to you that while Australian colleges are relatively cheaper, they DONOT provide any need-based aid to internationals and the same applies with UK.
