Assignment: Are we free to make our own choices in life, or are our decisions always limited by the rules of society?

Answer:
There are many people nowadays who say that their decisions are always limited by the rules of society and that they should be given freedom to make their own choices in life. However, I think differently. If a person wants to decide something, there is noone but only him or her who controls that decision, as the person owns his or her life and they can choose whether to follow social norms or not. The examples of Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of England and the world, and Michael Cabot, a famous criminal, have shown that people are not limited by social rules when making their own decisions.

Margaret Thatcher's career and life shows that one's choice, good or bad, need not to be restricted by strict rules of the society. In her time, the idea of one woman leading the Parliament was almost unacceptable. Everyone expected women to stay at home and do the housework. However, not affected by that rule, Margaret Thatcher chose to take a different step from other women. She offered herself for the post of senator and after many efforts, she was elected. Several years later, to everyone's surprise, she run the campaign to become the Prime Minister and was chosen. If Margaret Thatcher had followed the social norms, chosen to be a housewife rather than running for the election to the post of senator and later Prime Minister, she would never have become so successful in her career.

Another example showing that the rules of society can do nothing once a person has made his or her own choices of thing is Michael Cabot, who took up murdering people as a hobby. Obviously, it is illegal, even immoral to kill people. There are no official laws or unofficial rules which allow murder. However, when Michael Cabot killed his victims, he didn’t care about the laws or rules. He just did it to his own liking. Apparently, when he chose to take up that immoral hobby, he was free to make that choice and didn’t restrict himself to any rules.

In conclusion ,the examples above have clarified my idea that we people are actually not limited by any rules when we make our decisions in life. Whether we choose to do it or not, it’s up to ourselves. However, although we are free to choose to do anything, we should consider the moral standards to make a wise choice.
