Plebian Stats for USNA '10 are in ...

Here they are per "The Sun in Anne Arundel" 30 June 2006:
1,218 Plebes
273 women (up from 80 in '80, 136 in '90 ... and an Academy record)
285 minority group members (67 A-A,131 Hisp,43 Asian-Amer,25 Amer Indians,10 Hawaiian (??) or Pacific Islanders, 9 A-A/Hisp.)
12 International plebes (while none @ USNA, 1st time admittees from Iraq to USMA and USAFA, which also admitted 1 Afghani)
88 Alumni "brats" ;-)
89 kids of former enlisted Navy or Marines
397 (33%)from other colleges or prep programs (237 from NAPS, 18 Nuke Power School, 61 other Foundation-affiliated preps, 81 from colleges or other prepping places)
80% - top fifth of class
66%+ - between 600 & 700 Verbal SAT
85% - betwixt 600 & 700 Math SATs
90% - Varsity athletes
90% - drama, debate, public speaking
60% - NHS
35% - Prexy or veep of HS club
24% - school pubs (writing/publishing, not "pubbing") :-0
14% - ROTC program
10% - class or stuco prez or veep, iggle scout, or music leader

Lots of nice pix of the Plebes.

Does anyone know the approximate number/percentage of women, minority or international students who come from that group of 397 (NAPS, college, etc.?) I'm just trying to determine the shot for an awb graduating in 2007.

That looks like it is about 79 or so non-minority males straight out of high school? That doesn't sound like it's right!

huh?

Me suspects you were not among those above the 600 math SAT?

jk,jk

you may want to review, recalculate, recall your lesson on 'concentric circles.'

That's if you add all the numbers up and then subtract from 1218. That 397 number can contain women, minorities and internationals as can the navy legacies and enlisted kids categories. I think the 397 number may be where the minorities break 22% representation because of the state of some of our urban public schools.

I noticed at the local alumni dinner (suburban Phila) that the plebes for 2010 were all from private schools (mostly Catholic) except for two or three from public - no homeschool - and that's out of about twenty plebes. So I'm commenting on education quality and not minority quality ... I hope everyone understands this.

Also, there will also be women minorites who fill both categories and the internationals are probably largely minority, as well.

I hear Philly only has 18 non-Catholic h.s. students. Maybe that's why? ;-)

And in your very kind attempt to not offend, you've burned the 5,000 or so teachers and administrators laboring in the Phila publix. Oh well. Don't sweat it. You're a product of the PC generation. Your thoughtfulness is applauded. And your observations astute.

Right, I wasn't a math whiz! Oops, I see what you mean!

You're allowed one error on this exam.

Your allotment is all used up. lol

jk, jk, jk. honest.

everyone can't be as smart as ...

"I'm coming honey. Whadya mean I goofed up the garbage again!"

Gotta run. Have fun.

1991 was better. :D

Whistle Pig, thank you for calling me kind, but I wasn't pointing a finger at public school teachers. I said SOME of our urban public schools and you must know that many factors affect the quality of education at any particular school (private or public.) Family structure (that alone is a huge element), parent's education level, how much tv the kids watch, when do they go to bed, do/can the parents read, is English the first language for the kids, and a whole heckuva lot of other stuff.

What I wish is that USNA would say exactly how many awbs right out of high school are in each particular class instead of making people like me attempt statistical extrapolation. It seems silly to count noses but not all noses.

PS you'd be careful not to offend, too, if you'd witnessed previous discussions of this subject that got pretty heated.

Most of us recognize PC, and you're doing well in recognizingthe same (despite the fact you're thoughtful explanation has now endited new subsets of the population, i.e. single moms, social welfare lifers, Hollywood entertainers, corporate sponsors, the institutional church, etc. It's ultimately who is to 'blame' for urban kids not being among the USNA plebes. It's good you're learning about this relatively new world view because that's your world for now and the forseeable future, and you must make your way in it. Dinosaurs are dead.

Your frustration at even the mighty and terrific USNA's PC is understandable. You'll probably never be told that figure of "awbs admitted right out of hs" are admitted and frankly there probably is none @ USNA who are sufficiently brave to count that category of noses for none want that type of attention. So, you're left to your deductive reasoning and guessing.

Don't worry about it as there's nothing you can do to rectify it aside from doing your best always, letting the chips fall, and moving toward the light. It's your unfortunate reality that Academy admission is not merely about merit and being the best you can be. Life, including our beloved USNA, is ultimately much about politics.

And of course the supreme contradiction in this all is that a student may merit admission/acceptance to USNA, but even then his/her fate remains in the hands of your elected political officials, who are quick to cry "objective" in there selections. And I believe many, not all, are.

But if they really want it to be objective, or at least less political, they would quickly legislate to eliminate the nomination process. And of course, that won't happen in our lifetime. Why? It's called politics ... and power.

No wonder, USCGA gets the least funding per student of any. No nominations.

Again, simple reality, not worth devoting your energy, concern to.

do you actually mean indicted rather then endited? (I've never encountered that word before)

hmmm...I don't think I singled anyone out. I think your pov is reeeaallly custom.

You both have got to get a life..... at the risk of alienating myself on this board .... it would truly be a sad day to see the academy full of white boys from high earning parents, (whoops! that is what we have already!) who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter.... these kids who have had their entire lives scheduled for them, who have never had to have a part time or summer job, who can afford "summer enrichment" programs and "select" athletic teams......... Gee Whiz.... what about the kids who just wants to better his/herself, who can't afford $1000 SAT Prep classes, who works their butt off in high school. why should they be penalized for their parents?? It is GOOD to have diversity.... and frankly I would rather see a kid who is self motivated to succeed with a 1300 SAT who maybe can't afford college than a kid who has been handed everything with a 1500 SAT.... test scores and GPA's are nice but they are not everything and diversity is good. Frankly, I think that if a kid has parents that have the finances to write a tuition check should go to college and ROTC and open a spot for a well deserving student who may not get the chance for a college education otherwise.....

whoa that wasnt prejudice at all...

yep indict. and no not intentionally.

Good handle, Queenbee

shhh. listen. I think I hear violins playing.

hey y'all I'm just a homegirl from the hood myself...fwiw

You haven't alienated yourself. You have simply established the fact that you have no earthly idea what it is you're talking about.

Just "white boys from high-earning parents", eh? Reckon my middle-class Cuban parents never got the memo on that one.

All of that anger isn't healthy, either. Promise me you won't take it out on your dh or ds (if you have been so blessed.)
