A colleague of the great scientist James Watson remarked that Watson was always lounging around, arguing about problems instead of doing experiments. He concluded that There is more than one way of doing good science. It was Watsons form of idleness, the scientist went on to say, that allowed him to solve the greatest of all biological problems: the discovery of the structure of DNA. It is a point worth remembering in a society overly concerned with efficiency.

Assignment:
Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Many claim that people accomplish more when they are told what to do and how to do it. On the contrary, people accomplish more when they are given their own space to do things their own way. Several examples throughout life support this fact.

The first case that shows that people do accomplish more when they are allowed to do things their own way is the case of Mark Whiteman, a junior associate at Grayson Pears Law firm. He was given a probonal case to work on with a senior associate in the firm. The case was about child abuse and he had an idea of how they could win the case. The senior associate did not pay attention to anything he sad and told him exactly they way he should go about handling the case. He obeyed his senior associate and did everything they way he was told to do so. Unfortunately, they lost the case. It was only then that the senior associate realised that she should have left Mark to handle the case his own way. With this story, it is evident that people can accomplish more when they are allowed to do things their own way.

Likewise, one of my own experiences involving violin lessons supports this fact. Ever since I was a child, I loved playing hearing the sound of the violin and immediately I could, I started learning how to play. It took me a few years to master it and then I became very good. After some time, my love for playing the violin began to wither. My parents forced me to take five lessons per week after school and all I ever learnt was classical music and it got monotonous and boring. I quit playing the violin after some time despite my parent's opposition to my decision. After some weeks without playing the violin, I begun to miss it and gradually I decided to start playing it just for pleasure and I started teaching myself how to play different genres of music. Eventually, I decided to just teach myself at home and dedicate an hour each day to pay music of whatever genre I felt like. I was able to accomplish more when I was left alone to go about it my own way.

In short, different people have their own different ways of dealing with situations. As long as this fact is acknowledged then people will be able to accomplish more if their different capabilities are kept in consideration.
