They are at the post office in the ground floor of the Ferguson Center. You can go there in person to rent one, or you can do it online through the postal service’s website:

[USPS - PO Boxes Online](USPS®)

The zip code for the post office in the Ferg is 35487.

in another thread, someone said you can’t share a po box. but i am looking at the online app and it asks for additional users and gives you 4 spaces for additional users.

what’s up with that?

Hmmm, I don’t know Mike. We were told no sharing also. I did take care of that at Bama Bound & already have something that will be sent there at the end of August.

Question for current students: did you switch your subscriptions to your UA address? D has a few magazines that she gets & at first I figured that she’d keep them coming to the home address & I could just mail them down. But now I’m wondering if it would be better to have them sent direct. But then she wouldn’t get them in December & we’d have to switch it back over the summer…

well the online version allows sharing. not sure we want to share among 4 people, but i think 2 would be fine.

Unless you need to mail stuff down ahead of time to the PO Box, I would wait and and apply for a box in person. The online application doesn’t save much time for the postal workers as they are used to renting PO boxes. I needed my box number before I moved down and it was a hassle that involved going to my local post office and having them fax the university post office my information. The university post office’s is (205) 758-1852 and they are always very helpful.

Normally you can share a PO box, but the postmaster granted the university an exemption that only allows sharing between family members. Normally, any mail not addressed to the box’s owner or “current resident” will be returned to sender.

Student PO boxes use the 35486 ZIP Code. Despite the sign outside the post office, you can no longer list your address as “University, AL” and have to use Tuscaloosa, AL.

I normally have my magazines and government mail (ballots, etc.) mailed to my PO box and for the summer, I call each magazine’s customer service number and have them send my magazines to my home. You do need to do address changes about 6 weeks or more in advance. Having government mail mailed to your PO Box does not affect residency as it is just a mailing address, not a residential address. This is what many snowbirds and people working OOS do and so the entities mailing things are familiar with this.

If you are renting a box online, apply after August 1st so your renewal date will be August 31st rather than July 31st. In the rare chance you have any problems renewing your box, you’d be able to walk in and straighten things out.
