poetry interpretation

this is by the amazing band SLEEPING AT LAST (ryan o'neal, who's the sole "band" member, since the others left, does this amazing work all by himself.)

but he writes these beautiful songs, and i want some help with interpreting two verses:

we're taking turns
at shattering apart.
at least we're taking turns.

how did we get so good
at dismantling these hearts?
how did we ever get so good?

we dress our best
to receive their sympathy.
at our worst, we dress our best?

"time heals all"
according to these greeting cards.
oh how we'd rather time resets.

if we could turn the hourglass, we would.
if we could move a grain of sand, we would.
if we could find our way back, we would.

our minds keep spinning webs
of question marks and of regrets.
will our minds keep spinning webs?

i once heard honest words:
"though nothing may ever be the same,
the heart keeps widening for change."

the whole song is here, because that'll probably help with the interpretation.

mostly, it's the third verse that's troubling me, but the last is also kinda iffy. i just want to know if others are thinking the same way i am.

We put on a (superficial) show of goodness so people will like us, but on the inside we’re bad people because we’re “shattering apart” and “dismantling…hearts.”

Stuff changes, but you get used to it after a while?
In the context of the song, it might mean that people who hurt others begin to tolerate higher levels of evil in themselves over time. They stop feeling guilty after a while, and their hearts permit more.

Lol, I’m so bad at this.

so the worse you feel, the more you try to convince people otherwise? (i didn’t put the question mark in the verse, btw, that’s how the artist wrote his lyrics.)

ohhhh i like your second interpretation. that’s totally gotta be what he meant. i really wish artists would say what their lyrics mean. but at the same time, that kind of ruins the fun of deciding for yourself. but still it always makes me WONDER
