Just this month, I received notices that my poems will be published in two literary magazine: Hanging Loose, which is a nationally acclaimed litmag, and White Whale Review, an up and coming online literary journal.

My application focused on poetry a lot, but it lacked major achievements in poetry. (because litmags take months to reply back about submitting work!)

Is it too late to call and tell them? Will these make any difference?

Well, as that sounds like a significant accomplishment, I think you should inform them of it immediately, regardless of the fact that two days remain in the application review process.

Agreed. Poetry is particularly difficult to publish on the nat’l level (I applied with a strong interest in fiction) - hopefully they can recognize that - though I doubt it will be enough to sway their decision, unless you were very borderline in the first place.

I actually found out about Hanging Loose because it was in Harvard’s very own Woodberry Poetry Reading Room. I was there once and I saw the magazine and decided to look it up, lol.

yes, WOW, that is so impressive. i’m a writer and while i haven’t submitted anything to literary mags, i know people who have spent all of high school trying to get their work published and failing, so it really speaks to the quality of your work that you got published in two magazines. i hope they consider it in admissions! congratulations!

too late. all the colleges are getting down to the wire at this point…if only those editors could have told me about the publication 1 week or 2 earlier…lol…

Handala92, I sent an update to the file room 2 days ago…would that have made a difference?

I called the admissions office 2 days ago and the lady told me that they are pretty much done…but that i should sent an update to the fileroom email anyways, which I did.

Oh…if I was indeed on the tippy top…I’ll be so…ugh!!! :(

P.S. however, I did send a writing supplement with my application. I chose 4 poems that best represented me…all 4 have been published somewhere as of now: 2 in the White Whale Review, 1 in the Boston Literary, 1 in the Hanging Loose (though the office won’t know that)! LOL.

I’m guessing that since my writing will be evaluated by the faculty (hopefully…and not dumped in the trash by the adcoms)…if they do see something in me, the addition awards won’t matter that much?

My biggest downfall was not submitting my poems for publication early enough…never knew if I was good because I don’t know anyone else around me who’s into poetry.

Funny thing, so far I’m only been accepted to liberal arts colleges…all my non-acceptances have been from universities public and private. Maybe I was meant for the LACs…haha
