Hi, I am planning on applying to Lafayette this fall, mostly because it combines two of my most-desired aspects in a university - engineering program and undergraduate focus.

Nonetheless I'd like to know a little bit more on the culture at Lafayette. Are there any widespread racist or homophobic views on campus? While I understand there will be "haters" everywhere, I want to get an idea of what the general vibe is at Lafayette. I'm not liberal or conservative, I frankly do not care for much politics, however on social and other issues I am very liberal. I am more concerned not of the political viewpoints of students but if it is a generally accepting college, and any other points on the vibe at Lafayette you can make.

My D is a student at Lafayette. But from what I can tell, it is a very accepting environment. She has friends who are all over the map in terms of politics, religion, race, sexual orientation and they all seem to mesh together very well.

In general, she is extremely happy there. She loves the small classes, having a chance to develop relationships with professors, and getting involved in research projects. On the extracurricular front she found it very easy to get involved with and to eventually take a leadership position in clubs she enjoys. She’s made wonderful friends. She even stayed on campus this past summer to do a research project with a professor. She is not an engineer but her friends who are studying engineering are very happy there and a some have also had an opportunity to do research with professors.

Hopefully a student will chime in because that is the best source. @chatterpulse are you here??

As a person I don’t really have any political leanings but most of my social issues tend to heavily side with the liberals. As long as Lafayette isn’t disturbingly conservative I think I’ll do fine.

Horus, just because I used the terms “haters” and “disturbingly conservative” in the same thread in different posts does not mean they are correlated to each other. When I said “haters” I was referring to people who will treat others worse based on sexual orientation or ethnic background, among other factors.

Here is the context of my message;

I do not think you are proving anything by picking two terms out of context and attempting to cleverly label me as a “hater”. Sure, I am a hater, but it has nothing to do with people being conservative or liberal.

That’s probably better. butI disagree more with conservatives on most social issues but politically I disagree with both. Anyway I think Ive derailed my own thread !

Fresh graduate from Laf. Don’t worry, Lafayette’s a chill place, very chill place with lots of accepting people. I never had a problem making friends, even as an international student. People were accepting, helpful, and genuinely friendly. No strong political lean either. Nothing to worry about. Be open and accepting of others, and you’ll get the same response.
