I’m thinking about applying to Miami University this fall (I’m a high school senior graduating in 2018) but I’ve seen some statistics that say Miami is mostly conservative in nature. I consider myself very liberal and I’m not sure I would fit in at a really conservative school. I’m all for differing views and opinions, but I’m worried Miami is just not the right school for liberals. Can anyone attest to this? Or is this information wrong/irrelevant?
Ha ha. Miami is a state university. That is, it relies on public money. I think a liberal will not feel out of place there. But you’re correct about Miami’s reputation. It’s not known for its sit-ins and protest marches.
@mking00 - This question comes up several times a year. This is the most recent thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/miami-university-ohio/1937231-political-activism-p1.html You can Google this issue for past discussions.
I would add that about 1/3 of Miami’s students are OOS and most in-state students are from Ohio’s large metropolitan areas such as Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus.
I think you should attend any college with an open mind. If you are liberal, then of course support the causes which are near and dear to you. But, rather than seeking an environment of like-minded people, seek out opposing lectures and listen. Knowledge is power. How can you be for or against something if you don’t open your mind to learn all sides of an issue?
But politics aside, Miami is a phenomenal University. We went to orientation and learned that the incoming class of 21 is represented by students from every state and countries that I haven’t even heard of. You will find students from every walk of life and every political background.
Good luck to you.
