Would I be idiotic to put down that I've been to a few John Birch Society event? But before you jump to conclusions! I'm a left leaning liberal, attending an arts school in the middle of San Francisco. I've attended partisan events (although most of my activities are nonpartisan), from the ACLU to the Chinese American Republican Club, even though I'm a cardholding member of the Democratic National Committee. Real political activism isn't my forte, but I have been active. Would you give me an impression on whether or not you, and possibly adcoms, might react well.... hesitatingly if I put down John Birch Society (I didn't, but in my mid year report I was thinking of including my recent events, advisor to a state senator, participant in a think tank, John Birch Society luncheon, Chinese Republican Club dinner). I was hoping to show breadth, balance, and openness, although yea, I'm a little puzzled on how I ended up at several John Birch Society events. Yes they exist! lol

Yes, I think it would be idiotic. I am not saying that adcoms do not come from all branches of society, or that liberals have an advantage over conservatives, or vice versa, when applying to certain colleges. However, saying you attended a John Birch Society event is pretty much in the same area as saying that you belong to the KKK. (others please respond)

At any rate, your desire to show breath, balance and openness in this way is very risky. Risk not worth the possible gain.

thanks i kinda thought as much. it was an experience... to say the least. lol

yeah you can mention Republican club, but NOT John Birch Society. It does not show "openness".

wikipedia writes: " Nevertheless, the John Birch Society has always been open to people of all races and religions."

I checked wikipedia - I don't see it any less open than PETA...

Okay, the John Birch Society isn't really that bad. It is right-wing, anti-communist, anti-socialist, anti-United Nations, pro-Judeo/Christian, and very much into conspiracy theories. Who knows? Maybe they are right. Still, it doesn't look good on a college application.
