Political/ Religious viewpoints at BU

Hey, I’m going to be a freshman at BU come this fall, i was just curious about some of the viewpoints that are expressed at BU/Boston…such as whether or not the campus is slanted more liberally/ conservatively…whether religion plays a role or not in much of the atmosphere at BU

i do already have some ideas about many of these issues…but i would just like some clarification about some of them…

ps. im an extremely liberal/ atheist from a conservative suburb near Cleveland, Ohio…thanks for any input

well. you are coming to Massachusetts, one of the most liberal states. :]

I've hear that the city itself is actually quite conservative. The few people I know that are from the area back that claim up. However, from everything I've seen, the school and the schools around Boston are extremely liberal. I guess its just the business atmosphere in the city that is conservative.

I spoke with a few students when I visited last year and they laughed when I asked what the dominant political opinion was. Apparently, BU is almost entirely liberal.

bulgie, you are far from correct. Sure, asking a close-minded racist individual from any high school may be conservative.

Boston is by far one of the most liberal cities anywhere. If you mean conservative for business, then by all means every business is conservative.

BU is rumored to have one of the largest homosexual populations, the unfair quote is that BU girls have a relatively difficult time finding anyone because of the low male ratio and the high homosexual count. I have nothing against homosexuals, but I'm just trying to give a quick review as to why BU is so liberal.

BC on the other hand...

It always seemed to me that Boston was very liberal... and it seems as though that is correct. I must have spoken only with the minority. I stand corrected. After all, being from Ohio my point of view is a bit scewed.

"Sure, asking a close-minded racist individual from any high school may be conservative. "

What??? Please explain that comment.

Of course BU is very liberal leaning. It is in Mass and it is a university--most of academia is very left-leaning.

If you venture into the financial district and speak with some of the professionals, you'll find a lot more conservatives than you would at the schools in Boston; however, they'll still be predominately liberal. That doesn't mean that there isn't a conservative presence; however. I am conservative. A good friend of mine is conservative. My two suitemates from last year were conservative. There are conservatives--and they do tend to make their presence known on campus--but not a great deal.

BU has a substantial Jewish population, but you won't really notice it. Religion will have no role in your time at BU if you don't want it to.
