Political science: American, Carnegie Mellon, NYU

I've been accepted to all three schools and am trying to figure out the best option for me. American was a given for me, due to its location and strength of its program, but I'm also considering the other two for different reasons. Carnegie Mellon, although it's not usually considered a good poli sci school (from what I can tell), it has strong technology/science programs—good, as I'm interested in science/tech policy and development. NYU has a slightly different focus (more academic?) for its political science program, but it's also in New York, which is a plus.

It'd be a great help if anyone has any thoughts on this! It's very hard for me to make up my mind, personally.

Depends on what you want in terms of college life.

American is more of a traditional college campus (correct me if I’m wrong) and competes in Division I sports. If you’re interested in Greek Life then American U. has that. I don’t know much about CM, besides their performing arts program, so I won’t comment on that. NYU is farthest from having any characteristics, besides its extreme liberalism, of a traditional university. If you want a pure urban experience then NYU may be for you. The social life between American and NYU is night and day. I heard more horror stories in making friends when it came to NYU than any other urban university that I know of. Take that as you will.

Also, take into account your financial situation. All three are expensive (if your savings is like most Americans) but in terms of major I don’t see you going wrong if you attend American or NYU.

If I were you, I would choose American. It’s located in DC, has the college vibe that the country is known for and it strong in your proposed field. I have an acquaintance who graduated from American U. with a political science degree and she really liked it, granted she has the funds to pay for it. She now works for a research corporation.

Thanks for the advice! I was on the edge about NYU because I have a love/hate relationship with New York (the city) and they ended up offering me the least aid and I’ll definitely take your comments into consideration
