Political Science at NYU

I was just wondering how popular/strong/competitive the poli sci major is at NYU...thanks!

Hello... I'm not sure exactly what kind of information you're looking for, but maybe I could help somehow, being a Politics major at NYU.

By the way, for some reason, political science is just "Politics" here.

I'm not really sure how the department compares to other schools. There is an honors major track which is quite prestigious, though. There are some requirements and you would need to apply in your sophomore year. It necessitates keeping (I think) a 3.65 GPA, as well as having taken either a graduate course or a field seminar along with a course in quantitative methods. The major seems very large to me. I couldn't give an exact figure for student numbers, but I would venture a guess that it is one of the larger majors at NYU. The Politics Department is on the 7th floor of 726 Broadway. It can feel, a times, a nameless bureaucratic mess, but I do find that (being a large department) everything is very organized.

The one thing I would caution is that the Politics major here has a heavy emphasis on game theory, something that I've heard is not so common at other good universities. I really do not like the approach at all. At times, it seems more like algebra than political science. However, I have been able, for the most part, to avoid those courses since then, and have very much enjoyed all of my classes and all of my professors.

Thats because many graduate problems rely on game theory and almost all graduate programs rely on quantitative methods.
