Poll: Do you have a job in college? If so what is your major and what do you do?

How many hours do you work a week if you do have a job?

I work six hours a week at the state historical museum as a tour guide. My major is psychology, so it doesn’t really go with it, but I just started and I like it. Six hours is not much but it gives me a bit of pocket money and I don’t really need to pay for anything so I’m content.

I’m microbiology and my job is on-campus in one of the dining halls. On Fridays and every other weekend I work as a cashier (which is essentially just swiping ID cards) from 4:55-7:15 on Fri and 10:45-2:15 every other weekend.

Tuesdays I serve food from 4:45-7:30. Tuesdays shift is a pain because it’s a lot to do after we close that if it’s going to become the pain I’m expecting it to to, I’m going to just drop that day all together.

I’m not paying any bills other than my cell phone bill every month so it’s mostly for pocket money and savings for my Vespa that I want.

6 hours a week. Basically sit around babysitting some freshman EE’s and grading them. Doing it more for the resume than the money. Minimum wage * 6 hours * 18 weeks = lol.

I work 20 hours/week as an admin. assistant at the Land Policy Institute. My majors are international relations & economics. Every penny of it is going towards rent (and food and booze). I am also planning on getting a 10 hour/week volunteer internship.

I am a psych major and I have 4 jobs, because two of them don’t give me many hours. I work 4 h/week in the mailroom, 2h/week as custodian in the dining hall (might drop this though) and 8 h/week as student dispatch for security. Additionally I am also staff/chief for events security on Campus, but that only gives me 3.5 hours every other week or so (but he really nice pay (highest on campus).

Anywhere between 8 and 25 hours a week. I work at a domestic violence shelter (I work by myself so I basically do it all- take care of the needs of the women and children there and answer the crisis line) for one 8 hour shift (might pick up a midnight 8 hour shift eventually). Then I have a job at a photography place where I can get 0 hours or 15+ hours a week, depending on how many shoots there are.

I am a BA Arts/Humanities and BS anthropology major. I also have a 12 hour internship with a state senator. I also take on various tutoring, babysitting, dog sitting, etc jobs when they become available. I’m applying for another oncampus job for evenings.

Around 45-50 hrs a week as a real estate agent in Manhattan. I’m studying Real Estate at NYU for more the development side of real estate, like Donald Trump. I made my first commission 2 days ago and it was a healthy check  Basically covered 4 1/2 weeks of what a $10/hr x 40 hrs a week would cover.

I’m a freshman at Emory majoring in Educational Studies and Sociology. In addition to 18 (semester) credit hours, I work 10 hours a week as Institutional Research Assistant. I’m also leading a major program on a volunteer basis at an educational institution that serves about 75,000 students/year.

I work Phonathon—calling alumni, parents, regular donors, etc. for donations. It’s an easy job and I often have great conversations with alumni. It’s also one of the highest paying jobs on campus, and there are always delicious, organic snacks (oranges, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, chips and salsa and guacamole, etc.). I’m a history major so it has nothing to do with my specialization, but it’s a pretty sweet job.

I’m a biology major (premed), and work about 5 hours a week at the YMCA. But next month i’ll be working 10 hours a week. And every other Friday afternoon or so I shadow a doctor.

I am an engineering major. I tutor math for about 6-10 hours a week. They are mostly open drop in hours, so sometimes I get paid to do my homework if it is quiet, which is pretty nice.

Before I graduated, I was a math major with three jobs:

Staffing the front desk in the science library. (12 hours/week)

Grading for the math department. (~6 hours/week) I did this during quiet times at my library job; the librarian was fine with it.

Event helper for the Office of Conferences and Events. (0-20 hours/week, depending on my own schedule and the needs of the office)

You guys all have pretty cool jobs. I’m bummed because I’ve applied everywhere on campus but its hard to get a flexible job. I’m a cocktail waitress right now and I hate it. I wish I could find a job that is related to my field of study.
